Honestly, I think XIII has one of the best main casts in any FF. The dialogue is GOOD and their interactions are BELIEVABLE and they actually develop and change, not just as individuals but as a group. (And if you think Lightning's hot, wait 'til you meet Fang.)
Thoughts on the linearity or the story so far? I'll be spoiler-free, promise. *is frankly thrilled that someone else is playing this damn game*
I'm enjoying it a lot so far. Especially because personally I prefer linearity to not, and therefore don't mind the "run down hall, kill things, find treasure chests" setup. It suits my desire to know Where It Is I Am Supposed To Go.
The characters, I have met them for like three seconds each except for Fang (and I've seen other people playing her enough to know that she also falls in the "female self-confidence = teh sex" category), and I love them loads. Well, Hope less so, but that's because while his responses to date (he and Vanille -- okay, *Vanille* just pushed him into that bike thing and took off) are reasonable and don't make me *dis*like him, he hasn't done anything awesome/adorable/active yet. I retain faith. On the other hand, his mom parlayed three lines into one of the most badass NPCs ever and possibly the hottest character ever to wear a cardigan.
