Good to hear from you, and to find out how well Shitty Leg went. I'm considering the merits of booking time off and visiting oop north again; is this wise y/n?
All told, the event went brilliantly. Finished on such a huge high!
It's only in the cool-down afterwards that the 'my precious, precious free time!' panic reflex set in. It'll be gone come start of term - I've merely been really, *really* enjoying the last couple of weeks that haven't carried with them an obligatory 'oh god, incoming event, argh' shadow.
You *are* coming to the next one, yes? =D
Feel free to come visit us in York any time! By any time, I of course mean "Any time that is either not during term-time, or when someone who is not me is free to entertain you." on account of the fact that I'm generally unavailable on Monday (Ref meeting), Tuesday (Downtimes), Wednesday (Bar Night), Thursday/Friday (Ref meeting) and Sunday (Adventure Day) during the uni term! Might I suggest the character Khaniel plays when he isn't IC?
I think I'm gradually coming to realise that I genuinely *do not enjoy a PvP focus* in LRP
Mmm. I think I enjoy Maelstrom in spite of rather than because of its PVP focus... because I don't, really PVP in it. I've certainly never tried to kill anyone or get anyone killed, though there may possibly have been some political wrangling :)
I'm just saying that an individual's game in Maelstrom doesn't *have* to be PVP focused even though the system is. Though somehow I can't see you playing a mild-mannered trader. Not enough greatsword :p
Personally I've always loved the PVP aspect of maelstrom, especially when accidentaly PVPing the wrong person ended up with an apparently innocuous group wiping out my entire group and anyone and everyone who might feasibly care about them.
I think part of this comes from some very positive initial responses to my pvp actions, and the game the sort of game that people in my formative larp years enjoyed playing.
I can see why some people might not enjoy it, but for me at least a lot of the joy of a system is how responsive it is to what you put into it. With a PVP focus you can ensure that you always have something to be playing with, where as PvE is always much more reliant on the organisers being on the ball. Even when I'm not playing horrible murderous natives (there are other kinds! Honest!), I tend to rely on there being other people to oppose my plans, as I've often found that the success or failure of plans in PvE often feels quite hollow.
Trying to arrange a 'serious' movie night the day after an event is a universally bad idea. People don't wanna watch a movie - they wanna froth!
I shall make sure in future to mention in advance when I'm going to be an overzealous kill-joy and whine at people for talking over movies. If at least one person hasn't seen it before I'll try and make sure they get the chance to hear all the dialogue - and if it's something I'm watching because I want to enjoy the movie's atmosphere rather than a general atmosphere of friendly banter, doubly so.
Have to agree on the PvP. It's so much more stressful when you have to balance the inherent lameness with the fact that IC there might be little or no difference between a PC and a monster, as well as the 'ahh, whatever I do it'll be wrong somehow'. It's nicer if it's just not going to come up, and I don't think I could deal all that well with a system where it was set up to happen all the time. ~_~
Take all the time you need to yourself, though. I seem to be alternating between 'people, lend me your company!' and 'scary people are scary *flee*'.
