Dont quote me on this, but the rumour is that theres a Simpsons movie comming out. 2007 I think was what they said... I saw it somewhere..eek
But I think whats made the simpsons so horrid recently is the absolute lack of cultural and social references (ie, its being dumbed down), and there are no longer any subtle jokes anywhere (I rememeber one years ago, when Homer is in the car, just very quietly and quickly, the radio guy says "and that was Bobby McFerrins new one; 'Im worried, need money'"...anyone get that joke??).
That, plus what you already mentioned - those stupid self-inflicted-paid recurring jokes, where charactars hurt themselves on something, dont get the message, and go for it again - thats not funny.

It doesn't necessarily have to be pain, from my memory, constantly going the wrong way or taking the wrong turn isn't funny the first time and isn't funny when it's looping over and over again. While I like the fact that The Simpsons get celebraty voices in on the show, I think they do it so often that they're relying on it to get viewers
