Possibly a very stupid question.

Does bread (made from wheat) count as part of the 'five a day' thing?

If not? why not?

This is the same kind of question as the question I asked my mother the other day...
"Why do chips not count towards five-a-day? They're potatoes cut up..If I ate a potato it would count..."
She said they don't count but didn't know why. I want to know why!

Bread doesn't count because the wheat is processed to make flour, then has other ingredients added. The processing tends to destroy the nutritional benefits of the wheat.
