Squee! It has to be said, before I got completely enveloped inthe Connor!love, Nick was the first character that I really fell for when series 1 first aired.
There was just so much going on with him - the mysterious backstory with his wife, the relationship with Claudia (my very first 'ship' in this fandom was actually Nick/Claudia, in fact). And of course the sexy Scottish accent and the genuine happy enthusiasm for the creatures made him into a really attractive character.
looking back on it now, it's funny how things turned out. Makes you wonder what S2 would have been like if they'd carried on in the same way without the timeline change.
I didn't fall for Nick properly until I saw the repeat of ep 6 just before S2 aired, but he was definitely the character I was most interested in. There's a certain innocent enthusiasm in him that he loses in S2 - he's still amazed by the creatures, but not in the same wide-eyed, bouncy-joy kind of way, and I must admit, I did miss that aspect of character afterwards. After all, how many people do you know who could find a parasitical creature pulled out of a dodo's body so exciting? I love that little 'eucch' so he makes as it crawls out :-)
Lol! I think the excitable bouncy enthusiasm and sense of fun was one of the things that I loved about the series as a whole when it first aired. Series 2 was definitely a lot more serious, and they were all treating it very much as 'the day job', and they had all lost that sense of wonder they had in series 1.
The next time we really saw any of them enjoying the creatures was in 3.3 with the diictodons, but the less said about *that* episode the better!
I think he never quite lost his sense of how amazing it was, but yes, he never got quite the same enjoyment of it in S2 - though his reaction to catching the mammoth always makes me smile. It was probably a natural progression, given how things had turned out, but it's a shame we didn't get a few more 'dodo moments' before 3.03 - it was fun watching him trying to catch the creature and being hopeless at it.
I fell for Nick the moment he opened his mouth and out tumbled those gorgeous Scots words. And the attraction only grew over all three series he was in.
I love that his relationship with Helen is so complicated and never clear-cut. I love that he's loyal and kind and intense and smart and brave. And passionate.
He's half of my favourite Primeval pairing with Jenny or Claudia (though Matt and Emily come a really close second)
His and Lester's banter and snark always makes me smile and Nick has one sexy arse.
Professor Nick Cutter: total SSSSQQQUUUUUEEEE!!!!!!
Whatever you might think about Dougie's unfortunate habit of bailing out too soon, you have to admit, he was perfect for the part - gruffly good-looking, young but not too young, and sexy without being blandly pretty.. And I liked the way he wasn't shown as being perfect, even when he was nearly always right. And who couldn't love his 'ooops! dinosaur' face when being confronted by a dangerous creature?
It's hard to remember now, but I think I had expectations of the show being mostly about Nick and Helen. Which I think might have been interesting, but not so much fun as what we got.
I never watched Primeval on a weekly basis because the schedule was just too erratic on OZ tv, so I got to mainline all 5 series together on dvd and that was awesome.
What we got was fun and touching and total squee. Nick's a complex character and very human if that makes sense. Very believable in a show that has an out-there premise. really, if the main characters hadn't been so believable and so likeable in their own individual ways, I don't think the show would have worked for me at all.
I suspect that I would have been more upset about the bailing out if I didn't have the next dvd and delectable Danny at hand, but it was still painful and I still did a lot of yelling "NNNNNNNNNNNOOOOOOO" at the screen.
I'm glad for once that I got spoiled, because i wouldn't even have had a drink to hand to soften the blow otherwise. Going into that without an inkling... oh my! :-O
It's a great shot, isn't it? I love his expression.
Do you think, if it had turned out differently, that we'd all still be here? Sometimes I wonder. The best fandoms tend to be for shows with a lot to 'fix'.
I just wish we'd had a bit more of him in S3, because it left so much dangling as it was, especially with Jenny. Then again, I might not have gone on to write so much Nick/Jenny if so.
Yeah, in a post ages ago I pondered how much fic I would have written for this show if there wasn't so much to undo. For me, the show created great characters and a cracking premise, then failed to live up to either, so I thank them for the first two and for bringing me together with Denial, and keep fixing what they cocked up and seeing how others fix it *G*
It would have been interesting to have S3 as it had originally been envisioned, but I think they still would have killed Nick and Clone Stephen off anyway (and I think filming was happening right when JM's first child had the bad health problems then died, so he might not have been able to take part anyway).
I think the original plan for S3 was to have Nick killed off at the same time as Helen, at the very end. Which would have been okay - at least, I wouldn't have been happy to lose him, but at least we'd have had a lot more of him first. I wonder if they were going to have clone!Nick in the original plan. Perhaps not, if they had hopes of JM returning.
I wish they'd write a behind the scenes or making of type book for the show.
Me too, although I started writing gen Nick-Ryan, because apart from a wee bit of B7 I'd never actually written any slash, even when my gen for B7 had something of a slashy undercurrent. But once I'd started, it was easy, and lots of fun.
Even though I enjoy the later stuff, I do miss those innocent days.
He was, wasn't he? It was interesting to see the difference this afternoon during the rewatch. As lovely as S2 Cutter was in his way - and I adore him - a lot of the bounce had gone out of him.

Lovely piccie!
Our Beloved Cutter - Dougie was perfect in that role.
I wish things had turned out differently in that show... Oh well, thank heavens for Denial
