I don't know if it helps, but the volunteer thing could be more of an insurance or grant issue. I've run into some of those issues wanting to involve Jonno more in my work since I haven't found good student assistants, but the rules are very different when someone isn't an employee or student. That really, really sucks that you are caught in the middle of whatever flavor of bureaucracy.
I'm sorry to hear about the family stuff. WTF about waiting for an xray...that seems really weird to me.
UCD doesn't allow grad students to have paid assistants. They would probably let me work unpaid, as I've seen it happen before.
The people who own the hospital building where the lab is located (Shriners) will not let me volunteer. They didn't pay me before, so I don't know why I could sue THEM. But, it's a giant mess. They wont let me in the building so that's the end of it.
