Looking for Inspiration

In the spirit of keeping this community alive I'm asking for help getting some inspiration. I have some yarn that was given to me with the idea I would make a coat. I'd love a coat I could actually wear as outer wear, not just another layer inside. [nods] It looks like I'm going to be writing my own pattern and these are definitely places to start.

There are a couple of coats that might fit your criteria in Big Girl Knits, but I don't have my copy of the book here with me and can't remember their names at the moment.

Sally Melville's The Knit Stitch has a coat called Einstein that might work. Here is an ample-knitters group project gallery devoted to it: http://www.ample-knitters.com/einstein_gallery.html

I also second the Big Girl Knits recommendation.

This is a nice coat. I agree with one of the group that there is a lot of material under the arms, but I'm sure that can be fixed. Thanks!

There's an awesomely hot (IMHO) pea-coat in Domiknitrix. I don't remember how large her sizes go. It's knit sideways in garter-stitch.

There is a coat pattern on the Lion Brand Yarns website - free, of course - designed to be made on a "knitting loom." The coat looked so wonderful, readers demanded to see the pattern reworked for handknitting. They did it! Of course, they didn't bother to put a new photo up, so it would be sort of like knitting a bag in the dark. Loom-Knit Danbury Hooded Sweater Jacket is the name of it - it's hard to post a link with a site that uses frames. Anyway, it's a lovely, cozy looking coat that might work for you. Even *I* want one and my heavy winter coat is a fleece warm up jacket!
