Hi, I'm Karen, 18. Newly curly!

I used to have VERY curly hair when I was a little girl. When I got to late elementary it was thick and straight-to-wavy. I hit puberty and bam! Frizz and poof. I had NO idea how to wear it, so I'd pull it into a ponytail pretty much every day in early high school. Around 10th grade, I discovered the straightener!  I ( Read more... )

All that heat may be frizzing you out. I found that the more I did to my hair, the less I liked it. I HATE anti-frizz stuff, because it just make mine more frizzy. Curly hair is automatically more dry than straight hair, so you may want to consider not shampooing every day. Maybe just conditioning in the shower every other day might improve the state of things. I haven't brushed my hair in over ten years. I pull my fingers through it in the shower to de-tangle it ( ... )

Unless your hair is overly oily you probably don't need to be shampooing every day. That can strip a lot of "good stuff" out of your hair.

Just get it wet and condition it?

Yeah, there's actually a book that suggests the "curly girl method" which involves not washing it with shampoo EVER! The idea is that you can "wash" your hair with lots of things that aren't as damaging to your hair as shampoo. Personally, that doesn't work well for me because I'm really oily, but I try to keep the shampooing to 3-4 times a week and on the other days, just use conditioner.

dont shampoo at all, just condition
dont diffuse, let it airdry
try something heavier than spray, a gel or a mousse
dont touch it while its drying

I highly recommend the Curly Girl book too. When I used to shampoo every day my hair was very dry. Since changing to just daily conditioner in the shower and only the occasional shampoo (maybe once a week or less) it's improved a lot. Also, instead of combing hair straight, use your fingers to detangle, then gently scrunch in a little gel the AIR DRY WHENEVER POSSIBLE and don't mess with your hair while it's drying. Ha ha. I do that, too. I'm obsessed with spelling, grammar and the like, and am slightly mortified whenever I catch my errors.

I'd say don't shampoo often if you can handle it. I personally have to shampoo every day otherwise my scalp starts to itch and feel gross. Also, NEVER brush or comb your hair...just use your fingers in the shower. Your hair isn't that curly so it won't tangle a ton and your fingers would be enough to handle whatever tangles come your way. Don't re-wet your hair, either...and don't blow -dry. Also, try matting your hair dry with paper towels instead of putting it up in a towel to dry (which I'm assuming you might do?)

Eesh, I know it's a lot of don't do this and don't do that, but it'll help a ton :)

I forgot to say - squeeze your hair out by hand first. Then dab with paper towels. It frizzes my hair a lot less than the upwards towel thingy.
