Going Home (to a place we’ve never been before.) A New Returnverse Story.

Dec 05, 2022 22:00

I have begun writing a thing... I'm not sure anyone actually reads my stories here anymore - apart from epiphyta (I hope you are well Epi, it seems like ages since I saw you here). But I have always posted them here first, and so here is the first chapter of the story whose working title was 'Arrival of the Twins', which gives some idea of the theme!

It was three in the morning, when I started to read your new story. A good thing to start the day with, I'd say!

I enjoyed this. Is there any change of them reuniting with Frodo and Sam, or visiting their final resting places if too much time has already passed? You know me and hobbits, I'm insatiable...

Thank you. Too much time has passed for them to meet Frodo and Sam - they made their farewells in chapter 1 of The Valinor Trail. But they will certainly visit their final home and their final resting place.

You gave them a very gentle passing, which I appreciate. ♥

Thank you. And they have a very hobbity form of immortality - Frodo adopted The Winter Elfling and so Tharhîwon will always remember his Ada - and both Frodo and Sam have passed on many of their recipes to both Thar, Tindómë, and the cooks of Master Elrond's household :)

Oh, this was delightful. As the only child of parents whose families basically were wiped out, it's such a difference reading about grandparents and great-grandparents, and great-great-grandparents, etc. But you're correct - it's a very large and convoluted family tree by the time of Elladan and Elrohir.

And yes - where are Legolas and the Sindarin elves?

Thank you. I think it must be like some of the royal houses of Europe where it seemed almost everyone was related to at least three other different houses - but with the added problems of immortality, and trips through Mandos, meaning you get such odd intergenerational things as Celebrian's parents remembering her mother-in-law as a small child, even though her husband is much older than she is.

I think Elrond and Celebrian, despite getting news and messages from the twins when the Ithilrim arrived, don't really think of Legolas and his close friends and family as being all that close to them - the friendships really developed not only centuries after Celebrian sailed West, but mainly after Elrond did so as well. And Legolas et al are content to give them time as family before either sending invitations or inviting themselves on a visit :)

Don't worry - they turn up in the next chapter.

I have been awaiting this with a great deal of excitement!

Hmmm . . . elves likely don't get seasick, but I imagine all the non-sailors were very relieved when they reached the Straight Road. (There was a LOT of chop on the ferry ride Saturday.)

Yes, you silly boys, be nice to your nan - she was really up against it!

Lovely callback to your earlier story about Celebrían realising her Ada was there.

Séri's going to be laughing her arse off at all the "princeing" the Twins will have to do. *g*

Always talk to Glorfindal first!

Yep, I'd hide too.

Ouch, a room for Arwen - *winces*

All right, I'll bite, where my Ithildrim at?

Hurrah!
