Small Island Covid Update.

Jul 16, 2021 13:44

This is a 'state of the Small Island' covid post. Mainly for my own record, but also because we are, again, doing out own thing and are therefore, unofficially, something of a test-bed for the rest of the world ( Read more... )

I hope that that won't happen to her, but her track record with this isn't goo. Best of luck with both your infection rate and the dinner.

She suggested I make sure I have a good stock of food in, just to be on the safe side!

Yesss, her involvement should perhaps come with a warning label... 😁

I'm curious to see how the opening works for the under 18s. I know they're meant to shrug it off --- even in the midst of a vicious third wave our preschool babies go back from the July break next week - but this will be a good spotlight on how it really works for the young ones.

There is always the possibility that the real jinx is her husband... but he is almost certainly due to attend as her partner so we may still not be able to be sure :P

None of our schools have closed since we came out of lockdown in late April - there have been cases in both the NYKs' schools and they simply tested the other children in the same class and any other close friends. So far it seems to have been reasonably effective; the first case in NYK2's school was 2 weeks ago today, in a different year to her, and she says no-one in her class has been off sick since.

But it is early days yet and I will try to remember to look closely at the stats in another 2 weeks or so.

It is alarming how the virus is spreading again here. But it truly is in the younger and unvaccinated population who have taken the living with the virus a bit too literally. Unfortunately for the rest of us that skews the accumulated incidence for everybody and gives a bad reputation to the entire country. It's a sore point with me and so many here that this is happening. And there are ever younger people in the ICUs...
Our under 30 population is largely unvaccinated still...
Hopefully D-d's dinner event will go just fine!

We have had everything open, no number restrictions, no masks, since late April when there were fewer people fully vaccinated, but the borders remained tight, although not fully closed. So our young people have been able to party all they like since then - and it seemed to do very little harm ( ... )

Let's hope D-d's luck has changed!

I didn't realise you'd opened up quite as much as you have. I do think there is a point where we do just have to learn to live with the virus but it is a scary step to take. It will be interesting to see what happens here on Monday when we are supposed to open up fully!

Under the rock where I live (that would be Hungary, for those who've ever heard of the place), we've opened up fully already. It give me the creeps. I understand that the economy needs it badly, and that most people are simply fed up with the restrictions, but I think a more gradual attempt would have been safer.

Here in the UK we are supposed to open up fully on Monday despite a skyrocketing infection rate. Luckily I live on the outskirts of London where masks will still be compulsory on public transport but otherwise it is up to individuals to be responsible. I can't say I'm very optimistic about that!

Not only have I heard of Hungary I've even been to the beautiful city of Budapest :)

Oh, London! I've been there a few (too few!) times and would be glad to go again, unlikely as it seems.
Should we live long enough so that you can visit Budapest again, drop me a line. I live there and would like to show off my city... if we ever see the end of this misery.

Sounds a lot like how we're doing things here. Everything's open and masks are pretty much voluntary. I don't always where one but I have one with me all the time in case a restaurant or store wants us to wear them. (I haven't been in many stores and I think if I were to do more than run in and out, I'd probably wear mine.) I haven't checked Indiana's covid rates lately. I do know cases are going up generally; I've read that while some vaccinated people have gotten sick, it's pretty much the unvaccinated who are being admitted to the hospital and/or dying.

Here's hoping D-D's run of bad luck is completely over!

It really is clear that the fully vaccinated are not getting ill, nor even getting many cases of asymptomatic infection. (A couple D-d knows have been off-island visiting his relatives in England - since they returned he has tested positive, but 'hadn't got around to getting his vaccination' before he went - he had an appointment for this week. She has tested negative twice, but had her 1st jab 10 weeks ago and is due her 2nd one this week.)
