I'm so glad that this community got spot-lighted! I joined it last night, and it made me want to make cupcakes straight away! Unfortunately it was 1 am. So today a mate and I made one of the new recipes I found online. It was rather exciting, I'd never heard of funfetti before *g*. I'm a brit, but I've lived in both the US and UK, and I have to say ( Read more... )

"Americans make gorgeous cupcakes"

I've never heard this but uh...thanks? lol. I've yet to make any cupcakes so I guess someone else should say it.

I meant it in that I've made quite a few cupcakes and I've preferred American recipes to British recipes.

Did they melt and leave little colorful spots in the cake part? Because if that's the case, they did exactly what they were supposed to. If they melted and left no colorful spots behind, you do need to keep experimenting, though.

Nope, absolutely nothing happened, which was quite dissapointing!
That's why I'm using colored sugar strands next *crosses fingers*

According to this website (http://www.thebakerskitchen.com/CAKE_SHOPPE/Sugars/Non-Pareils/non-pareils.htm) what people typically use to create that rainbow effect is rainbow non-pareils. I don't know if you can get them in a regular store outside the States, but you could certainly order them online, including at the site I linked you to.

Of course, if the colored sugar strands work out, there's no need to get them, but when I saw that those were used for confetti cakes I thought I'd mention it to you. I suspect most of us Americans just use a box mix when making Funfetti cakes, so this was actually kind of educational for me at least ^_^
