Sugar paste toppers?

I am making my friend an array of ocean-themed cupcakes for her birthday. my idea is to make "waves" out of blue and white buttercream frosting and to use sea critter toppers. i found some on ebay that i absolutely adore, but they are rather pricey, and in australia. does anyone know where i might be able to buy something like these either online ( Read more... )

Cost Plus World Market sometimes has marzipan creatures.

You could also make candy molds in the shape of fish and shells. :)

fondant is kind of like cake clay. you should get some fondant in the color you want (or just get white and food color it) and mold little creatures.

some thing else you could do, is print out pictures from the internet or something, and then stick them on tooth picks? give it a comical sort of feel, rather then realistic?

i do that during the holidays. usually halloween, it involves cut outs of various monsters, that get stuck into cupcakes that look like dirt mounds for zombies and what not!

what about gummy fish? go to a candy store. I think I have seen chocolate seashells, as well.

last month we had a luau for my daughter's birthday. i did one batch of cupcakes with blue frosting "waves" on top, and one batch with crushed up cookies for "sand". the "sandy" cupcakes had white chocolate shells that i had made in advance.
you can see them all here in my post from last month. ^_^
