Re: Alexander - indeed. You know, I resigned about twenty minutes in and consoled myself with the thought, "well, two and a half hours of staring at pretty boys in pretty costumes is worth something too". I spent the rest of the movie feeding on the eye candy.
And welcome back! How was your trip? Huh? Huh?! You'll need to tell us about it!
You lasted twenty minutes? Somewhere in the iridescent shimmer of the opening credits, the Male moaned, "Oh god, why are we here?" *G* I didn't even find the eye-candy that worthwhile, because Colin's hair was a disgrace, Jared Leto looked too much like Kurt Cobain (we kept sniggering) and Jonny Rhys-Meyers wasn't on screen enough.
Trip was GRAND. (S'good to be back, though.) I made a incredibly brief summary of it on my blog, but I haven't told in any detail. Maybe once I get my pictures digital.
I keep saying this movie didn't tank because of the gaysex, it tanked because it's just plain bad. I saw it having some notions of ancient history and NONE of Alexander, and I understood next to nothing. I suppose I'll always be grateful to Stone for making me read Mary Renault; and now, six books later, that I have a very good layperson's understanding of the period, I can see who's who and what's what in the movie.
But, hey, films that require you to swot for a month and a half to get them? So not the thing.
Dude, what gaysex? I mean... I wouldn't even slash Alexander and He's-a-feisty-one. Nothing there. (And then, then, just in case we were getting nervous, five minutes worth of naked, rolling tits-and-arse het sex scene. WTF?)
Because I'm a student of strategy and a lover of museums, my knowledge of Alexander and surrounds was precisely limited to a vague idea of his overall strategy and its huge gaping holes, and an appreciation for Darius' palace. I don't honestly think I was missing anything in terms of knowledge for the movie. I think it was just bad; jumpy, episodic, unlayered, falling over itself, wasting its own pace, totally confused.
My point being: you are way right on every particular. *G*
I'm pretty sure it was the work of silviakundera. Unfortunately, her old website is way down, but hopefully you'll be able to find it. If not, I suspect I still have the CD Calico gave me full of shiny things. Somewhere.

It was only a passing fancy ... but if the shiny Calico CD ever reappears, consider me interested in borrowing it. :)
