You've probably all noticed that I've been watching Torchwood and reading the fanfic lately. What you probably haven't yet realised is that I think I've... um... sort of... fallen into fannish love ( Read more... )

I have always had a vague discomfort with declarations of 'Jack/Ianto OTP!*' because, not having seen the show but having heard an awful lot about Jack, I couldn't see how it would be in character.

So I would definitely be interested to see where you'd go with exploring their relationship.

*I am here interpreting OTP as a monogamous relationship, the kind of thing you described with "married and shacked up and monogamous, as though that's the only way they could be happy together" which (again, caveat, haven't seen the show!) feels very unfaithful to the character(s)**.

**I have heard an awful lot about Jack's character but very little about Ianto's, so I don't really feel I have the authority to make declarations about his sexuality.

In conclusion, I... like to make snap judgements about characters?

I'd love to see Jack and Ianto's positions on their relationship realistically explored. I have a few friends who live polyamorously, who know me well enough that I'm called in for consultation on communication issues and insecurities, and Jack and Ianto are absolutely the perfect pair to demonstrate what it can really be like. I look forward to your stories!

I think having an open relationship comes down to one thing - "I might sleep with Mr A and Miss B and have a great and satisfying sex life with them but I'll always come home to you and I'll always make you feel loved and wanted"

Being in lust is about loving someone but being able to leave them at the end of the week, whereas being in love is about feeling pain at the idea of never seeing them again.

Hope that helps, I'll go now.

In my own personal canon, Jack and Ianto aren't really serious until the beginning of season 2. Up to that point I think their relationship was open, though I don't think either of them took advantage of that nearly as much as we might assume, despite Jack's flirtatious nature ( ... )

To me, Jack is the sort of man who flirts with anything that moves, and who has so much love inside of his heart that he shares it with anyone who might seem like they need it.

Yes. That's exactly what I've been thinking, and it's one of the things that fascinates me about him.
