It's time for my annual remixredux08 debriefing post, in which you are all welcome to hang out and discuss the pitfalls, problems and triumphs of this year's challenge

I'm staying logged in because this doesn't give away anything about what I picked or which fic is mine. This also might sound like a dumb comment, but bear with me.
American Idol actually influenced me :)
It's true. One of the mistakes AI contestants seem to make is singing their favorite songs, rather than songs that best suit their talents. I felt like that when I was picking the fic to remix. I was very drawn to one in particular- one I'd always admired. But after hemming and hawing for a few days, I couldn't come up with a good angle. So I read a fic I probably never would have read, and everything immediately opened up. It played so nicely into my hands. And it's an AWESOME fic, but I probably wouldn't have read it if it hadn't been for remix because I was so dubious about certain aspects of it.
I chose a personal favorite this time too, which was -- as you say -- daunting but lovely. I'm really happy with what I created; I am on pins-and-needles waiting to find out whether the original writer liked it too! I know the point here isn't necessarily to create something that will make the original author happy, but that always feels like one of my goals anyway.
And then I wrote a pinch-hit which is totally different from the first remix story --at least, it feels very different to me. I took weeks to write the first one; I wrote the second one fairly quickly. So the experience of creating the two was very different.
Staying logged in 'cause I'm going to be really general. This is my first remix, and I had a great time! I actually hadn't read the story I picked, but when I found it, bits of a possible other half started popping into my head right away. Once that happens with any writing project, I'm good to go. :-) I definitely can't wait to see if the original author likes it. I did think of him/her as my primary audience. (And of course I'm chewing my fingernails off wondering what my remixer did.)
Remixing rocks, yes. I totally want to do it again.
After I submitted my remix, I thought, "Well, this fic is too quiet, too unassuming; nobody's going to notice it." And then I realized that that was actually a good reflection of the underlying motivation of the story.
So if no one comments, I'll have done my job well! That tickles me to no end. : )

I got to write for one of my favorite authors, someone I've secretly been a fan of for a long time.
While I did use what I consider to be my typical style, I got to explore some characters and scenes that I normally avoid.
