In phineas_gatsby's fic, Rex comments that he made a request of Bree when they were newly married. So this is like a super-prequel to her fic, in which we see that scene play out. Because it seemed too ridiculous to just let go.

Enjoy!

Title: All I Ask of You
Author: Juno (but with heavy help by phineas_gatsby)
Rating: PG-13
Timeline: About 1987

It was always a relief to Rex to be able to return to the tranquilty of his home and of his marriage bed after endless hours of running labs and testing patients and scrubbing in to observe and assist with surgeries, especially on nights like this, when he had been on call the previous two nights and therefore looked forward to a bit of relaxation and a bit of time with his wife.

The hectic pace and bustle of the hospital seemed very far away when he was reclined in his bed, Bree’s head resting against his chest. They had pulled the blankets up around them to ward against the cool of the night, and he could feel her skin warm against him as they relaxed in the peaceful afterglow of lovemaking.

It was difficult, at times, trying to balance internship and marriage. Often his thoughts and priorities jumbled together, and sometimes he found himself thinking about his position in the surgical foodchain while at home and thinking about his new bride while at the hospital. He often wished that he could split himself in two and spend all his time both perfecting his surgical skills and with his wife, because despite the frustrations and the fact that Rex really didn’t like making decisions, he was positive that the best two decisions of his life were applying to medical school and asking Bree to be his wife. And he was fairly sure that as long as he could be a doctor and be her husband, forever, then everything else could fall away and he would still be fine.

However, at times he did feel as though his life was terribly unbalanced, and he spent far more time at the hospital and on his career than he did on his wife. And there was some guilt that went along with that, although Bree often assured him that she understood, and that although she of course missed him she had known when she agreed to marry him that they would have to deal with many days and nights without each other until Rex completed his internship and received a more balanced work schedule.

For now, though, all thoughts of the hospital were banished away and he was solely concentrated on the woman lying in his arms, her masses of red hair spilling over his chest and shoulder and her pale skin glowing in the faint moonlight that made its way through the small chink in the curtains on the window. She was beautiful, and she was his.

“I’m glad you’re home,” she murmured, and he smiled, dropping a kiss on the crown of her head.

“Me too,” he said, and she sighed with contentment.

A few minutes peacefully went by, and he hated to break the serenity of the moment. But she deserved a warning earlier than when he was rushing out of the house early tomorrow. “I’m on call again tomorrow night,” he told her, stroking her hair and admiring the bold color.

“Again?” He could not see the expression on her face from the way she was laying, but there was no mistaking her tone, laden with disappointment. She often tried to hide such feelings from him, but sometimes he could catch a glimpse of her saddened expression when she learned that she would be dining and sleeping alone again.

“I’m sorry,” he said honestly. “You know I’d rather be home.” Which was of course, the truth. He didn’t mind the days at the hospital, where the hours went by quickly in a flurry of activity, but the nights were quiet and lonely in the on-call room bunk and he missed her.

She tilted her head up to look at him, a small smile of resignation on her face. “I know,” she replied. She put her hands on his chest for support as she pushed herself up into a sitting position, a wicked smile curling across her face. “I suppose,” she said with the kind of sweetness he had learned meant that she was in a teasing mood, “that we should enjoy the time we do have, then.” At her words, he scooted up so that he was sitting up, as well, resting his back against the headboard of the bed.

He leaned back to admire her unabashedly when she swung her leg over to straddle his lap, her red hair deliciously rumpled and her green eyes darkened with desire. Her lips were still reddened and swollen from his earlier kisses, and he let his gaze wander down her body, taking in her long, graceful neck, her delicate curves and tiny waist, her long legs, and her fair, unblemished skin.

And now she was blushing at his open gaze, still the new bride a bit unused to such an intimate stare, and she averted her eyes bashfully. He found her shyness wonderfully endearing, as well. He loved that she seemed unaware of how breathtakingly beautiful she was, and he loved that he was the only man ever permitted to see her like this, the only man she ever trusted and loved enough to give herself to completely, with everything she had and was.

“You’re beautiful,” he told her softly, letting his hands slide up her sides, and her blush deepened as she leaned forward to plant a sweet kiss on the corner of his mouth.

He caught her face between his palms, cradling it gently so that he could pull her in to kiss her properly, and she sighed with contentment, her arms coming loosely around his neck, her fingers lightly tangling in the back of his hair. He kissed her deeply and lazily, more languid than their hurried kisses from earlier, where loneliness and time apart had shown their effects.

“Mmm...I love you. And I missed you,” he murmured when they briefly parted for air before she kissed him again, her lips and mouth warm. And he did. Nights at the hospital were long and lonely-he had already gotten used to sleeping beside her and found that sleep was much more elusive when he was alone, no matter how exhausted he was from the day’s work, and he often found himself drifting in and out of consciousness wishing that she could be beside him.

Unbidden, images of red hair and long limbs sprawled across the on-call bunk, of soft skin and muffled sighs and the need for speed and for quiet enhancing every sensation flitted through his mind, and he tightened his arms around Bree as he shivered.

It wasn’t the first time such a fantasy crossed his mind, but he never shared it with his wife. He was fairly certain that she would refuse and would certainly be horrified that he harbored such lewd thoughts. But he couldn’t help it-the idea of making love to his beautiful wife while his fellow interns slugged through a mountain of paperwork and ran labs was too erotic to completely let go.

Well, maybe she wouldn’t. He was only thinking about his lawfully wedded wife, and he was only thinking about her because he missed her. Maybe she would be flattered. Maybe she had similar thoughts, alone in their house. Maybe-his brain shorted out briefly as she pressed herself down into his lap and moved her lips from the corner to his mouth down to his chin. Maybe, he allowed when he could think properly again, maybe he should ask her.

“You could stop by tomorrow,” he suggested hesitantly, his voice a bit breathy as she kissed along his jawline, sucking softly on the tender spot right below his ear. “Stop by the hospital.”

“Mmhmm,” she agreed distractedly, much more interested in her task than what he happened to be saying at the time. “Did you want me to bring you something?” She kissed his earlobe softly before catching it between her lips.

He took a deep breath and decided to take the leap. Because, well, the worst that could happen was her saying no, right? “Well, how about your sexy red panties?” He tried to make his voice light-hearted but still inquisitive enough that she knew that he, well, wasn’t kidding.

She bit down on his earlobe. Hard.

“Ouch!” he exclaimed in shock as Bree pulled away to give him an incredulous look.

“I’m sorry, I must have misheard you,” she said, her tone disbelieving. “Did you ask me to bring my underwear?”

“That really hurt!” he said, more surprised than put-off, as he raised a hand to his throbbing earlobe.

“Rex, I’m your wife,” and her tone had a bit of hurt in it this time. “I’m not some…some call girl.”

He looped his arms around her waist to keep her in his lap as he pleaded his case. “I never insinuated you were,” he replied, slightly offended.

“You asked me to come have cheap, tawdry sex with you at the hospital!” she exclaimed, and he frowned.

“It wouldn’t be cheap,” he said, honestly surprised. “It would be…us. How could it be cheap?”

“It’s unprofessional!” she sputtered, her face flushing in embarassment once more. “Not to mention, completely unladylike.”

“No one would know,” he said persuasively, letting his hands come up to rub her back gently. “It’s just that I get so tired working for thirty-six straight hours. And I miss you. And I thought…”

“I would know!” she interrupted, and she covered her face with her hands. “Oh, I could never face any of your colleagues again!” She lowered her hands as a sudden, more horrifying thought occurred to her and she looked at him with wide, startled eyes. “And if someone walked in on us! We’d have to move!”

“Oh, come on, you think we’d be the first?” Rex asked, his voice half-teasing, laughing as she lightly smacked his shoulder. There was something adorable in how flustered she was, and it softened any disappointment he might have felt over her refusal.

“See! You knew!” She poked him in the chest accusingly. “And you were just saying, a few days ago, how ridiculous those silly soap operas were, with doctors having sex at the hospital right and left and that it wasn’t true!”

“No, I said that it was ridiculous that all of the doctors were having sex at the hospital with other doctors,” he qualified. “And that isn’t true,” he hastened to assure her. “I just want you, honey. Only you. And no one would blame us,” he claimed. “You’re just being a supportive wife!”

“Absolutely not,” she said stubbornly, crossing her arms in front of her chest. And then, a bit more pleadingly. “Couldn’t you just wait until you come home, honey?”

“I’m not going to be home for thirty-six hours,” he reminded her, but his voice lost some of its persuasion as she gently kissed along his jawline before moving her attention to his neck.

“Isn’t it worth it?” she breathed huskily into his ear. “Aren’t I worth waiting until you come home for?”

She had him there. He opened his mouth, hoping that some infallible, extraordinary argument that would change her mind beyond the shadow of a doubt would come to him. But she pressed her advantage and kissed him deeply before he could say anything, and he moaned softly into her mouth.

She pulled back only a inch, close enough that he could feel her lips moving near his and feel the breath escaping her mouth. “I’ll be right here when you get back,” she whispered, and her hands slid down his chest. “And then,” she kissed him again before breathing promisingly, “I’m all yours.”

Her eyes were dark under lowered eyelashes and her tone low and seductive, and he couldn’t resist her. He pulled her tightly against him, sealing what small remaining distance there might have been between warm, bare skin, and slid one hand up from her back to tangle in her hair before pulling her in for another, more demanding kiss.

He felt rather than saw her smug smile before she eagerly responded to him, the smile of one well-pleased with themselves for emerging victorious from a battle.

He asked again the next day, as she finished preparing his lunch, her hair still rumpled from sleep. He came up behind her and rested his hands on her hips, feeling the soft curve of her body underneath her terrycloth robe.

“Please?” he asked in his most charming voice as she placed his lunch in a bag before turning in his arms to face him. “It would be so nice to have something to look forward to on such a long shift.”

“Well, you can look forward to a well-prepared lunch,” she told him brightly, taking his lunch off the counter and handing it to him with a winsome smile.

“There’s nothing wrong with a man wanting his wife,” he said persuasively, squeezing her hips lightly.

“No,” she agreed, her voice lower as she draped her arms around his neck. “But you won’t be having me at the hospital.”

And then she slid her hands teasingly up his chest, her smile full of lavish promises. “But when you come home…” She kissed him lightly, first on the cheek and then on the mouth. “Well. Let’s just say that I will be here and waiting for you.”

Well, at least he had something to look forward to after his shift. But perhaps it was worth one last shot. “Please?”

“Absolutely not,” and she gave him another kiss on the cheek before pulling away and giving him a bright smile. “Have a nice day!”

Okay, now that I've caught up on all my one-shots that I promised at different points, I can finally return to my chaptered fic! So hopefully Chapter 3 will be forthcoming in the near future.
