Calling all Moms, Herbalists and Well-Read Hippies!

Does anyone know any reliable ways to induce labor? I am going to try a blue/black cohash tincture, but I don't even know if that really works. I read about it on a midwifery site on the Internet. I am so uncomfortable I'd try nearly ANYTHING right now. The baby is over 7 pounds already and I shudder to think of him hitting 10 pounds-plus for a ( Read more... )

I know nothing about this, but I'd second K on the don't-try-this-at-home. I guess I flunk the hippie test. :)

A coworker of mine just had her daughter induced by her OB, right on her expected due date (baby didn't seem to want to come out on her own). It went beautifully.

I love the name, btw.

Sex, long walks, booze (one glass twice a day), lots of sex.
Repeat.
There is a hormone or enzyme(I forget which) in semen that will help induce labor when your at the end of your pregnancy.

My MW gave me a bottle of castor oil that I luckily never had to use & I also vote "no" on the cohash. That tincture was an absolute last resort with my MW if all of the above failed and we went over 42 weeks.

Just get nekid and go at, who knows how long it will be before you have any interest in a penis after you give birth;)

I am letting the majority rule here and will NOT be taking the tincture. I have been so nauseous lately, I fear the castor oil would get puked up immediately. Sigh. I think the short walks are about the best option, assuming I can walk more than 10 steps in the 90 degree heat. Being pregnant is so not fun. And I fully concur I am a whiny wuss.

If you have steps that you can walk it's supposed to be helpful to get labor going. Plus with steps you can find a building with A/C to walk in. We have a big flight of steps up to our apartment and I would walk up and down those for some exercise because for some reason it was easier for me than walking on flat land.

oh...also there is the nipple rubbing thing that's supposed to help. If nothing else it wouldn't hurt anything. Though it is a bit time consuming. If you're interested I can get you more info on the technique...I've got it in one of my pregnancy books.

The walking is tough, but the nipple thing I could handle. How is it done? Today we are going grocery shopping, which is about all the walking I can manage before I feel like I'm going to pass out. I have no idea how women work right up to giving birth, but it might help if you aren't nearly 40 like me.
