Doctor Who?

I'm now back at work, but I spent the majority of my entertainment time while I was off watching Doctor Who. I had watched Season 6, but I was curious about the David Tennant seasons, and didn't really know much about the Christopher Eccleston Doctor ( Read more... )

Heee, welcome to the club! Isn't that show awesome?

I enjoyed Christopher Eccleson, but David Tennant was just absolutely fabulous as The Doctor!

(The Captain Jack thing blew my mind as well.)

(And the season 4 finale was heartbreaking indeed).

The hard thing about this show is seeing characters you love go--I loved David Tennant so much that it took a while before I started appreciating Matt Smith. I really loved Matt Smith's companions and was heartbroken when they left.

OTOH, the show keeps reinventing itself and different characters keep things fresh.

Each actor brings such different attributes to the character that it's hard to pick who did it best! David Tennant had a lot more time with the character to define him.

I think Matt Smith had a harder time taking over the role because
1) he had to follow David Tennant--no one would envy him that!
and
2) he didn't have the luxury of having a continuing companion, like Ten did with Rose. He had to start fresh, and I think that would make it harder for people to connect with him.

Yes, it's true that the show really reinvented itself between seasons 4 and 5--most of the ancient allies were gone, as were the companions, it was a whole new era.

Of course, the show has been doing that several times since the very first "classic" episodes--that's probably one of the reasons why it's still around.

And as you say, following David Tennant would have been hard no matter what. ♥

I am, unsurprisingly, delighted at this news! Martha and Amy+Rory are my favourite companions. I loved Martha, I really did. There was something about Nine's stories and his prickliness that I really enjoyed too, and of Christopher Ecclestone is physically incapable of turning in a mediocre performance.

I'll be interested in what you make of season 5, which I like very much- particularly the episode Vincent and the Doctor, which will break your heart in the absolute best of ways, I promise you.

If you are looking for fics to read, a good place to start is A Teaspoon and An Open MindI also strongly recommend Torchwood too, which is the spin-off with Captain Jack. Seasons 1&2 are patchy with some very good episodes, but season 3 is amazing. Amazing; it's political drama that just also happens to be set in the Doctor Who universe. And it has Peter Capaldi in it too- my only concern about him being the Twelfth Doctor is that he is just stunning in Children of Earth and I would hate for that to be undermined. I don't know if you are ( ... )

I really liked Martha too--she's my favourite so far. David Tennant really owned the Doctor (though he had 4-ish seasons to work through the character), but Nine was an interesting study of the Doctor too. His time was too short as the Doctor for people to remember and rave, I think.

I knew about Torchwood (docTorwho)and who doesn't love John Barrowman! Andy watched some episodes of Doctor Who with me, but since I took him to see The Wolf of Wall Street, I can't imagine anything on Torchwood that would contain more debauchery than that!
