That is wonderful, Claire! "Cooney's imagery and invention is as fevered as always with her work"--that is such the perfect way of putting it, and I love that about your stuff. And what he says about being hopeful even though the end is uncompromising makes me think of Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind--which *has* to be a good thing.
Thank you! I loved Nausicaa -- although it was a long time ago I saw the film, and I mostly remember only vague things about it. I never actually read them.
I did buy the whole set of the comic books for my youngest brother-by-my-mother because he loved the movie so much and wasn't in a habit of reading.
I remember the world was poisoned (something is always poisoned in a Miyazaki film), that the protagonist was a girl, and that she flew.
In the books--though this wasn't explicit in the movie--the people alive in the present day of Nausicaa's world have adapted to live in their semi-poisoned world--but they will not be able to survive in the world once it purifies itself.
... there's a really moving scene in the books where Nausicaa says something along the lines of every thing deserving to have its chance to live, and that we take joy in our life, even if it's brief, even if we're dying. ... Something along those lines. I found it really inspiring. --And it sounds as if your world has something of this feel to it, from what Rich Horton say.
