♨ Ten Apples and Cinnamon - Voice / Action ♨

[Stay occupied, stay occupied. Desperately Winry's been trying to throw herself so far into her work so that she may forget about everything. Normally this isn't hard, but a handful of things have been weighing heavily on her lately. Between Ed's announcement about Pride, Donatello's odd behavior, and her attempts to ignore the war, this girl has ( Read more... )

[Edward usually goes to the smithy by mid-morning after taking care of food and any household chores, so if Winry's still there, he'll likely see her.]

If not swords, then what do you make here?

I make various little things, and do more tinkering than anything. I've made watches and wind-up toys. My specialty is making prosthetic limbs, but I wasn't able to finish any of those until the electricity came.

...Prosthetic limbs? [The others are fairly generic and uninteresting, but he's never heard of that.]

Yes! It's called automail back home. Full metal limbs that function perfectly, with flawless design and unlimited possibilities when it comes to upgrades and attachments. [Oh boy, Edward. You could be setting yourself up for an ear full. And excuse her while she almost-but-not-quite swoons over here.]

[Maybe someday she'll return the favour by listening to him gush about Sigmund. As it is, he's pretty fascinated.] Metal limbs that actually work? How is that possible?

[Oh Edward, you have no idea how glad she is you asked!]

When a person is in need of a replacement limb, and order automail to be installed, they go into surgery. During this surgery they have a port installed; this port converts electrical signals from the brain through the nerves into pulses that can be used to control wires. These wires lie under metal plating, and connect to a metal skeleton. The signals from the brain pulse into the wires, telling the skeleton what to do. This way automail functions just like a flesh limb would! However due to the metal plating the sense of touch is altered. But it's worth it to have back a lot leg or arm right?

[Wow, and here Edward thought Sigmund was the only thing he would ever fanboy over. Winry gets an instant gain of +25 awesome in his book.]

That... that is amazing! It must take an incredible amount of work to create something as intricate as a limb!

I'm glad you appreciate the complexity and effort it takes to create automail. It's an art, and should be treated as such! [FINALLY SOMEONE WHO DOESN'T GIVE HER A BLANK STARE OR LOOK AT HER LIKE SHE HAS THREE HEADS. FINALLY.]

...Would... it be at all possible to show me? [He's not sure if it's some sort of family/village secret or what; sometimes it's offensive to ask master craftsmen to share their work, after all. But something like this could do wonders to the people of his world.]

W-well of course! I have plenty of prototypes in my room I could show you. Or - ! My friend Ed, he has a set installed. I could let you meet him?

Thank you for both offers. ...Another Edward, though? [Surpising. Mind you, he's seen over the journals that he's not the only one with the name. Makes things a bit confusing at times.]

Yes, his name is Edward Elric. I guess it's a popular name.

I suppose it must be. Unfortunately I'd be wary of examining a stranger's replacement limbs, so would it be possible to see both?

Of course. Just the human limbs, or should I bring in the others I've been working on?
