So my boyfriend and I were discussing art and styles and such, as we tend to do from time to time. The subject of the great movement against super-desu art came about. Lately I've kind of been questioning it.

And rightly so. Good Western-style art is good, and good manga-style art is good, and anyone who's claiming either style inherently sucks can go throw themselves on a cliff, far as I'm concerned.

One thing I'm not understanding, though - people are saying anime art isn't expressive? Looks just as expressive as Western art to me... it's just done in different ways.

On DA and in my art school a lot of people claim Western art is more expressive and anime is limiting, which I think it stupid. Both can be equally expressive and people who say otherwise are pretentious douchebags.

Sounds like the whole genre-ghetto thing to me. Like where Literary people reckon SF/fantasy/horror books aren't Real Writing, so people like Margaret Atwood bend over backwards to claim they're not writing SF when actually they are. Same kind of thinking.

I know I'm a complete stranger, but I just so happened to stumble on this and I have to completely agree. Some manga artists are superior to other manga artists as some western artists are superior to other western artists, but no one style is superior to the other. However, to play devil's advocate, I'd like to point out as a sculptor that the reason art schools probably look down on students drawing similarly to anime is because their art tends to look flat and without volume because of it ( ... )
