Margene sat tensely on the couch with Wayne and Raymond on each side of her. Her eyes grew wide as she watched the news discuss the Mormon leader they were chasing. In all honestly, she didn’t know much about him, only that he was apparently sneaking in underage girls for marriage. So based on that alone, she didn’t like him. Nickie was sitting on one end of the couch with that permanent scowl on her face. The phone rang, shaking Margie out of her daze.

“Hello?” she asked as she jumped off the couch and answered.

It was Barb. She didn’t want to come back home. The whole fiasco had shaken her up quite a bit. Margie passed the phone over to an insistent Nickie and she chewed on her lower lip while the two women talked. She couldn’t do this without Barb by her side. She was her protector; she was like her mother in a sense. There was no way she could survive this marriage without Barb.

“You should drag her back home, Bill,” Nickie huffed as she hung up the phone.

“Just let her be, Nickie,” Bill replied gruffily.

“She’s so selfish,” Nickie fumed as she gathered her boys up and went to head back home.

“No, she’s just taking it hard is all. She’ll be back…don’t worry,” Margie assured her.

“You are so naïve, Margene,” Nickie said as she rolled her eyes.

“No, I’m not, you’re just a bitch,” Margie snapped, pushing past Nickie and walked out the sliding glass door.

“Mother! She just swore!” Raymond said as his face twisted in shock.
“I heard her, pay no mind to that and never repeat what she just said,” Nickie told her son, but secretly she was proud of the backbone Margie was getting.

This marriage might survive after all.
