Gwen sat on the steps of the castle, tapping her foot.

It was calming, in a way. The silence that surrounded her, broken only by the sound of her foot hitting gravel. She tried to concentrate on the rhythm, trying to sooth her own agitation that hadn't seemed to calm since her conversation with Ianto. Her stomach was churning, and hadn't let up for hours now. She tried to keep her mind on the silence.

Silence which was broken by the sound of a helicopter.

Gwen waited, knowing exactly what was coming. Sure enough, a figure appeared on the path, dragging a suitcase behind her.

Standing up, Gwen crossed her arms. "Well, time to play welcome wagon," she muttered, and waited for the new arrival.

Beckett saw the other woman stand up as she approached. Not for the first time, she wished she'd kept her gun with her. She felt safer with its reassuring weight resting at the small of her back. Unfortunately, it was locked safely in a drawer back in her flat. Oh, well. Beckett would just have to rely on her self-defense training.

Walking towards the front door, she took stock of the other woman: brunette, early-thirties, between 5'7" and 5'9", black leather jacket, red shirt, black jeans, boots... And, judging from her crossed arms, not in a good mood. That made two of them.

Beckett dropped the handle of her suitcase once she reached the other woman and the front door.

"I'm Detective Kate Beckett, NYPD. Mind telling me what's going on here? That helicopter pilot wasn't exactly forthcoming."

Oh, another copper? If this kept up, the castle would become a law enforcement convention.

Not to mention, if people kept coming, eventually they'd have to take up rooms in other time-lines.

Gwen wasn't too fond of either idea.

"Gwen Cooper, Torchwood," she replied. Chances were, if Detective Beckett were just your run-of-the-mill American copper, she hadn't the slightest idea what Torchwood was. On the other hand, it scarcely seemed like a secret worth keeping anymore. "And I'm sorry to say, it's not exactly good news. You mind comin' in? You might want to sit down for this."

"Ms. Cooper." Beckett gave her a slight nod in greeting before following her into the castle.

Gwen's accent was from somewhere in the UK, but Kate couldn't quite place it. As for Torchwood, that sounded like some kind of private security firm. She made a mental note to ask Ryan or Esposito about it when she got back. If she got back.

The interior of the castle was pretty much standard issue: stone floor, enormous staircase, wood trim. Beckett almost wondered when she was nearly as much as where.

"Okay, so. Torchwood. Are they the kind of company that would kidnap an NYPD detective and hold them hostage?" Beckett was usually more tactful than that, but she wasn't exactly feeling hospitable at the moment. "And why am I here? What do you want with me?"
