he directed his skyblue eyes to Jack, blinking a few times. "I am Eric Northman, Sheriff of Area 5." he said dryly. "But seeing as it would seem we are not from the same.. area's, I doubt you know that. For what I gather, the vampires have not revealed their existence yet..?" The impossibly tall norse vampire crossed his arms, staring with a smug face at them.
"No, as a general rule, we don't have random vampires roaming the streets back home," Jack said casually, but with a definite bite to his voice. "Although here it seems to be more common."
He leaned forward, resting his forearms on the table, and studied Eric coolly. "Jack Harkness, Head of Torchwood. Kinda the Sheriff of my own area, back home."
"Ah," was the response Romana gave the young woman. Conversation normally said a lot more than books, so Romana took Dairine's word for it. "Powerful?" Now that was different. "When you spoke of errantry I presumed you meant knighthood..." With that her words ceased her words.
"Well I feel sorry for the person that did eat this...fruit," Romana replied after listening in on the message and giving a few replies herself. There was something very time-tot about the whole 'apple was stolen' message. Yet knowing this wretched place, the fictional story could easily become realistic.
"Head of Torchwood?" Romana repeated quizzically. Jack, this new guest of theirs made her feel...disgusted...and Romana's expression seemed to show it. Something about him was just wrong. Something that went against her Gallifreic instincts more than the vampire did. And well, she was suddenly curious to why.
Dairine grinned in response to Romana's comment about knights. "Well, it's sort of like that," she said. "You could think of me as a Knight of the Universe." Which actually had a really nice ring to it, now that she thought about it.
Then she got distracted by the phone message and left her own little trail of comments that eventually--for no apparent reason--stopped. In the end, probably a good thing, since she didn't want to antagonize this fox (or whatever) too much.
Done with that, she looked back up at the group. "So..." she said. "Does anyone have any ideas about how we should organize this?"
"Yeah, Torchwood," Jack replied casually to Romana, one eyebrow lifting slightly at her expression. It was an expression he had seen before, and it gave him a pretty good idea who she must be. "It's an organisation originally formed to protect the British Empire from alien threat. It's - er - changed its remit a little since I took over."
He smiled at Dairine, shrugging slightly. "Well, I guess our job here is to decide how we can help protect the inhabitents of the castle and its surrounding area from harm - I'm assuming of the supernatural variety, since this is 'Special Branch'. Which, as I said, is kind of what I do for a day job anyway - and you do too," he added to Dairine. "What about the rest of you? Any useful skills or experience?"
He deliberately did not look at Eric for any longer than he looked at any of the others, though he couldn't help thinking the vampire seemed more likely to inflict harm than prevent it.
It hadn't taken Romana a second to smile at Dairine, "Then I'll think of you that way, Ms Dairine. I believe with a title like that, I have no doubt that you'll be of great assistance."
When Jack began to explain, Romana remembered the Rani speaking of a Jack, which lead her to wonder how the Rani was doing. There was a slight hope that the woman was still here so maybe Romana could bounce off ideas with her once more. Though quickly the thought escaped her mind considering there seemed to be more important things to think of at the moment.
"I've heard of Torchwood, good work I might add." She tried her hardest to smile at Jack. He seemed kind enough, but there was still that grotesque feeling.
With an innocent expression, and a look towards the ceiling Romana decided to speak of her 'useful skills and experience', "I traveled and saved more than a few worlds, civilized and rebuilt a pocket Universe, became the Last Lady President of a now extinct race, and quite recently I've helped with a few Alien attacks over Paris. So, I

When the phones went off, Mulder pulled his own off, settling into a chair and scrolling through replies as he rocked the seat back on its legs.
The word "Torchwood" however made his head jerk up, along with the references to aliens. Whatever hypotheses he'd been putting together about this apple thing flew from his mind immediately.
"Wait, you work with Gwen?" he asked abruptly, suddenly leaning forward in interest. "Gwen Cooper?"
Don't worry - it's hard to keep track of everything!forever_jackJune 19 2010, 21:18:52 UTC
Jack smiled wryly at Romana's little speech, especially the grin that ended it, and inclined his head respectfully. "Lady President. I believe I have heard you mentioned once or twice, and may I say how pleased I am that you too survived the war." He grinned, eyes twinkling at her. "And how sure I am that anyone who's survived travelling with the Doctor must surely be useful in helping to protect the people here!"
When the second man in the room, who'd been quiet until now, suddenly spoke, he looked at him sharply. "Yes, I work with Gwen. And you are...?" He couldn't remember if he'd heard Gwen mention anyone other than Tony. She'd been very much focussed on Tony recently, for obvious reasons.

Eric followed the conversation with slight interest, deciding to take it slow. His waist long raggedy blonde hair was tied in a ponytail, which was much more convenient, as he listened, noticing Jacks look earlier, and he lifted an eyebrow too it. "I hear there are vampires here who are out of bounds?" he smiled. "I assume that would be a nice duty for me." he chuckled a bit. He was not, however, pleased to see that he was disregarded pretty quickly.
Dairine, for her part, sat back and listened. She was pleased that Jack had acknowledged she'd be useful (because of course she would be), but she was still working on the being good part, so it was much better if other people subtly hinted that about how they felt about Eric instead of her. She hadn't disregarded him--far from it--but she also hadn't liked how he treated her. She'd wait and see how that went.
“Yes, there are vampires here who are out of bounds,” Jack told Eric coolly. “At least, there were. One of them seems to have disappeared and the other was recently killed, so hopefully we don’t have to worry about him any more.” A flicker of darkness showed briefly in his eyes, and a muscle ticked in his jaw.
“As for everything else…” He glanced round at the group. “It seems we have a good variety of skills and experience between us. I’m not quite sure what “Special Branch” is supposed to do, but I guess we’re to be on call in case anyone needs help in a hurry, or to look into anything odd longer-term. Which - goodness knows - there’s plenty of odd stuff here to look into.”
"I'm a bit pleased about that myself," Romana smirked, because it was something that she repeated to herself on a daily basis. Being alive. It was a wonderful feeling, and she suspected that she was alive for a reason, a reason she'd yet to find out. Maybe help here? Maybe for something entirely different, but there had to be a scientific reason. "Most definitely, I hear he only chooses the best for that same reason." She assumed Jack was one of his former companions, which would explain the cause of his...wrongness. But she smiled. There was no reason to be rude anymore

"This place is a bit odd, yes." he pursed his lips a bit, staring at them. "if there are any unruly vampires, I will pull together that mess. One rogue will ruin the reputation of all of us, and we cant have that." he grinned. After all, he *was* the owner of a tourist bar blooming. he knew all about needing to make sure it was under order. Although he did hate drinking synthetic blood.
"Fox Mulder," he replied to Jack. "Gwen and I went time-spelunking shortly after I got here." It'd been a long time, and he hadn't seen her in far too long. Maybe he should try to get in touch.
He listened to the conversation, chuckling and shaking his head. This was all almost funny to him, really. If he hadn't seen what the Doctor had shown him, he might feel very differently about what they were all saying now, but as it stood, he just felt once more how ironic it was that he had been thrust knee deep into this place full of all the things he'd spent so much time arguing must be real.
Jack relaxed instinctively as he saw Romana... accept him, much as the Rani had. It was a relief, because he couldn't help but hate people feeling he was wrong.
When Eric spoke, he relaxed even further. Perhaps the vampire's obvious sense of superiority could be useful here. "If you would be willing to try to keep the other vampires in check, that would be - well, it would be fantastic," he smiled, though there was a shadow behind his eyes. "I... don't seem to have done very well at that so far," he admitted uncomfortably.
He nodded to Mulder with a faint smile. "So you're aware of Torchwood and all the odd stuff, then," he confirmed. "Sorry, I think I missed you saying what it was that you do?"
