Man, so the Olympic torch is winding its way through London as I type. What a surreal scene! Blue Peter TV presenters getting jumped on by pro-Tibet campaigners; fire extinguishers going off and the police treating it like a bomb (initially the news was shouting about smoke bombs). There appeared little reason to check out a film by an obscure Thai director, Pen-Ek Ratanaruang, except for the fact that it was shot by Wong Kar Wai's famous cinematographer, Christopher Doyle.
