Unsubscribed NetFlix Reviews #9

Jul 26, 2009 11:36

After the last one of these, I got an anonymous comment from someone who felt they needed to tell me they were no longer "subscribing" to my "blog". You may have won this round, Internet, but I swear I'll get you back someday! *cough*

The backwards bookstore scene, I remembered, though I had forgotten the justification ("He's Swedish") for it. The falling guard that shatters is the image that made me want to see the movie in the first place, back when I was a kid. Also: how f'ing young was Val Kilmer, huh?

I'll be curious to see how "Up" pits against Wall-E for you.

I hear lots of good about UP but it's gonna be a hard battle against something that has robot intelligences, a ruined Earth, and a generation ship.

"Up" does some more great things with storytelling-without-words, but yeah, it doesn't quite press the geek SF buttons like "Wall-E". Still a great film, though.

Up blew Wall-E out of the water for me. But I liked Ratatouille better than Incredibles.

So, I take it it's not that I missed you yet again here at San Diego, but that you're not here this year.

Correct. First year I've had to miss in the last fifteen.

Top Secret: the Beach Boys parody "Skeet-Surfin' USA" killed me.

Kids In The Hall I'll guess KITH was a stage act and developed all of their characters then; most ensemble TV shows work that way. In Britain they often do stage, then BBC Radio, then finally TV. The Mighty Boosh and I think League Of Gentlemen did this path.

KITH's Brain Candy is fun. Not brilliant but fun.

Crazy People: this sounds like a Hollywood saccharinified version of How To Get Ahead In Advertising.

coincidentally we also just rented 80 days, totally fun film, especially San Francisco depicted as more violent and dangerous than any of the other exotic locales they visited.

Democratically violent and dangerous! "You, sir, how shall you vote? Put up your dukes!"
