that's what happened to me when iTunes asked to update the iPod software and I said *yes*. It wiped it clean and I have avoided updates ever since.

There are some great things about iTunes etc. but the whole *not being able to save your iPod library as a seperate entity* and all that just STINKS.

Just tell them there is something wrong with it and trade it in. There probably is!
