To write, or not to write

I'm currently making a rather lame attempt to write a fic. I had an idea for a fic but of course once I've had a couple of days to think on it, it doesn't seem like such a great idea :-/ I'm trying a completely different approach this time though. Instead of just writing I'm actually trying to build character details. I'm not convinced this is ( Read more... )

I generally get an idea for a scene, and once I've kinda pictured that I tend to make a plot outline or list of Things That Should/Or Could Happen In the Story. I don't always follow the outline, but it's nice to look at and go, 'Okay, I know what I was thinking there.'

Character details, sometimes it's helpful to make a list of everything you know about the character. Sometimes I go through questionaires like this and it helps me get an idea.

I really like that link you suggested. I've saved it and will definitely come back to it, thanks! I've always just had scene that I would start with an build around it. I've never tried to write down an outline, I just kind of have it in my head. I think my problem is actually trying to find the time :-/

I write in bits and pieces for a new fic, always. Sometimes its a scene, or just a few lines of dialogue, whatever the inspiration is and then I build around it. And I always have the ending written before I write the beginning. For me, I can't imagine it any other way. I have to know where I'm going to end up ( ... )

This is kind of similar to how I usually work. I seem to always come up with something in the car as well!! I started carrying round a notebook for ages, but ever since I got pregnant I can't seem to focus like I used to. I like your idea of joining the pieces together, right now I've got this one scene stuck in my head, but I keep thinking I need to start at the beginning. Maybe I just need to sit and write what's there.

I could say I would share, but I've got a feeling this will be a long term progect LOL

Are you trying to write original fic or fanfic?

When I wrote (not for about a year and a half now) I would get an idea for a plot that would naturally grow and get stuck and unstuck! I would scribble down notes but didn't draft the whole plotline beforehand. When I used original characters I had to build the characters a bit first, not all that successfully.

Good luck!

It's original fic but with a strand of Supernatural. I say "stran" coz there are hunters but Sam and Dean or any other Supernatural characters don't get a mention.

I haven't actually been able to write since I've been pregnant. It's frustating, but I can't seem to focus enough to write more than a couple of lines. I'm going to try it again, though it's difficult to find the time.
