Except it isn't a retcon, it's an alternate universe, which they make sure to explain in the film.

And yeah, there are a million clues that you pick up on if you already know it's going to happen. None of the many people I saw it with/talked to when it first came out saw it coming even with the "clues".

The movie (IMO) used the alternate universe plot to retcon the series. I'm sure it was done to help newbies understand what was going on (as in, we're all new to this new Trek) but it wasn't necessary. The plot easily could have been in the original history, which was never shown on the series or movies, and still been fresh for everyone.

Making it an alternate reality feels cheap somehow, and unnecessary (Unless they make this the mirror!verse).

As for Spock/Uhura, their conversation about not assigning her to Enterprise to avoid the appearance of favouritism seemed very explicitly relationshipy to me.

Speaking of Spock, I'm guessing your a Kirk/Spock girl? ;)
