Dec 15, 2016 19:11

It has been announced that Tsukada Ryoichi will be starring in a butai in April/May 2017, called Sakura Papaoh (サクラパパオー)! This will be his first time as a solo lead in a butai, after his double-lead one this year.

Sakura Papaoh will have performances in Saitama from 26~30 April, Tokyo from 10~14 May, Sendai on 16 May, Aichi on 19 May, and Osaka from 25~26 May.

I've translated the info from the Parco site under the cut, including Tsuka's comment.

Introduction:
Somewhere in the night, at a dream racecourse,
A one night comedy where a small miracle occurs.
To believe in something, to feel uneasy if you don't bet on something,
The story of the mysterious creatures known as human beings.

The well-made comedy masterpiece, "Sakura Papaoh".
After the performances by the theatre troupe "Rappaya" presided over by the comedy master Suzuki Satoshi, this work was staged as a Parco Produce in 2001, to a favourable reception.

That "Sakura Papaoh", is being revived as a new comedy by the hand of Nakayashiki Norihito, who is gaining attention at Parco Theatre as an up-and-coming director representing the next generation.

Please anticipate the new "Sakura Papaoh" born from the collision between the constantly evolving veteran comic dramatist and the new talent responsible for the next generation!

Story:
The stage is a racecourse in the evening, and a twilight race is about to start.

Tabara Toshio (Tsukada) and his fiancée Okabe Kyoko (Kurokawa) were about to enjoy a date at the racecourse when an unidentified woman, Helen (Nakajima), appears. Kyoko is suspicious of the relationship between Toshio and Helen. However, Helen's objective was the elite from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Matoba Hiromi (Katagiri). Matoba had come to the racetrack to recover the 8 million of public funds that he'd paid to Helen. The middle-aged man who had been toyed with by that same Helen, Izaki Osama (Ito); Sugawara Sachiko (Hirooka), who frequents the racecourse due to the influence of her late husband; the indecisive salaryman, Yokoyama Ichiro (Ichikawa); and the suspicious tipster, Shibata Tooru (Kimura). By chance these 8 people with varied circumstances cross paths and meet, at the evening races.

Meanwhile, a horse called "Sakura Papaoh" suddenly begins to run amok in its paddock...

Tsukada Ryoichi's comment:
◆ Your appearance in "Sakura Papaoh" has been decided, please tell us your current feelings.

I was really happy when I received the story.
I was shown the document DVD of the 2001 performance, and while it's a very nice production, and along with being delighted, I want you to see this work created with everyone including the director Nakayashiki-san, I'm not only pleased but now have "Let's do it! I want to deliver fun things!" kind of feelings. I can't wait to do it.

◆ Please tell us about the part you're playing.

I play Tabara (田原), his age is close to my own.
When I watched the 2001 version, I felt that he's a straightforward and serious person. There's a scene in the beginning where a lie is exposed in front of his lover, for such a woman and lover you'd think about it to the extent you believe "I've got to make a good impression", so then you persevere and tell a lie and in the end the truth comes out. But such a part is also somehow sweet, it felt very true to life.
Because I'm also the type that can't lie, I wonder whether we're similar on such a point. At this stage I don't know, but I probably can play it as it is.
However, as this work is set in a racecourse there's bound to be horse racing talk and technical terms, I think I should take this opportunity to try to study.

◆ Please send a message to all the fans anticipating the performances.

This Sakura Papaoh is a story in the betting ring at a racecourse, but I think those who aren't familiar with horse races can enjoy it too. Horse racing is one point, but besides that there's connections between people, there's love born there, there's interesting negotiations, and because such parts are the points that I most want you to see, I really want all kinds of people to see it.
By all means please come to the theatre. Yoroshiku onegaishimasu!

Also, I didn't make a post about this previously, but later this month and in January Goseki Koichi also has a butai! It's called “Shakespeare Monogatari” ~Shinjitsu no Ai~ SHAKESPEARE OF TRUE LOVE (「シェイクスピア物語」~真実の愛~ SHAKESPEARE OF TRUE LOVE), and according to the site, Goseki is playing a character called "Ned". It describes him as the star performer of the Admiral Theatre, rival of the Rose Theatre. He loves being in the lead roles, and dance is also his speciality. He assists with Shakespeare's performances.
It has performances in Kanagawa on 23~25 December 2016, and 7~9 January 2017, in Osaka on 21~22 January 2017, and in Nagoya on 28 January 2017.
