Don't buy new but get advice. I bought both my bikes for under $400 each and love them; I got super lucky with my current bike. Seth found it for me on Craig's list. To start with, I'd get measured at a shop and test out several bikes with them before buying, then still don't buy new for now. What you can do is look at eBay and Craig's list and maybe chat with Seth or me on email to see if something that looks good really is good.
Oh but I am tempted by this one new $1500 bike that I do think is really good... Maybe next year.
Yeah! I may eventually put a sticker on one of my bikes. I don't want to put any on my pretty pink sparkly bike though. I have a Timbuk3 bag which is kind of a courier bag. I did do a tough kind of hover, ride partially into the street at this ridiculous intersection and pause, then finish crossing without having to unclip yesterday. And there are a very few stop signs I don't stop at, but they're on the trail, not the street, and I sloooooow down.
But the real question of course is, when you ride, do you make it smooth?

But I do have a KEEP CHURCH AND STATE SEPARATE sticker on my bike.
And I have a courier bag. But I sure as hell don't ride like a courier.
