How to tip the ends of coated wire?

Nov 16, 2016 20:19

So I'm planning several more of my plushie projects. For one of them, I'm using some black-coated copper crafting wire to fashion glasses frames, but I don't want the ends to be sharp and end up digging into the cloth. Is there something I can stick on the tips of the wire to round it off and prevent that? It's 16 gauge wire, if that helps any.

wire, plush

Something like Flex Seal. You can just keep on dipping the ends in until you get the thickness you want [http://www.flexsealproducts.com/product/liquid/] You can find it in hardware stores. Or jewelry handle dip [Plasti-dip, Tool Magic, etc]

We have one of the Flex products in the garage. I'll have to see which one it is! That would probably be my first option of choice since it's right here. Thanks!

Just make a small bend or curl in the wire tip before you dip so it will make a nice 'dot' on the end and not push through.

Not sure how heavy/flexible 16 gauge is since I've never used wire before, but maybe electrical wire caps would work for you. They come in lots of sizes and could be glued onto the ends of your wire if needed.

That's an intriguing thought. Maybe that would work! I'll have to explore the options. Thanks!

I've never tried this for wire but there is a spray/paint in a can called plastidip and it's used for creating a rubber coating around tool handles. It's rubbery when it dries, and the more coats you put on, after each one dries, the thicker it gets.

Oh, interesting! That sounds worth looking into. Thanks!

What about clear nail polish or good old Elmer's Glue? In either case, dip the end in a bit so the liquid isn't just a bead on the tip.

Happy crafting! :-D
