To Crack or Not To Crack

... That is the question! Are you unsure if your chosen pairing is really considered a crack ship or not? I know there are so many exceptions, what with all the subtext in canon. (Or was that fanon? Oh my.) So I've decided to try and ease your uncertainties. Note that the definition for "crack ship" in this community may be a bit different from the ( Read more... )

I am ALL OVER this BB, but I think I better ask if my current ship of choice fits in it. I have other crack ships that I know fit in, but I think I better ask about this one.

Elena/Elijah of The Vampire Diaries. They have TONS of chemistry, TPTB are well aware that they have tons of chemistry, and seem to be playing with it consciously. So the answer to the questions is more or less, '...kind of' (not fandom's most popular, but definitely gaining popularity).. So it's sort of sitting on the border line of crack ship so I'm asking if it would count.

*snugs* I was thinking that TVD and Glee are probably two of the more worrying fandoms, seeing as their characters have been matched up in all sorts of possible combinations already. In fact, when I had this challenge in mind, I was hoping more people would want to write Klaus/Caroline. And, well, canon came and answered my call on its own.

With regards to your question, I personally feel that Elena/Elijah is still considered a crack ship for this challenge, even with its growing popularity. I could easily answer no to two of the important questions, but, also, right now I feel that they could happen. But they haven't and it isn't entirely likely. So for judgment call I'd say that, yes, for now we are allowing this pairing. Hopefully when sign-ups officially open it'll still be in the borderline zone. However, if you're still feeling unsure about it then, I'd suggest going with another pair. :(

Klaus/Caroline is like canon's crack ship. Don't get me wrong, I think they're kind of adorable, but they make no sense.. But yeah, it's a hard show (with Glee, and a lot of teen/soapy shows really) to say 'this is crack, but this isn't' to things. Because everyone has the potential to get with anyone else.

Hey, I'll be more than happy if E/E aren't a crack ship by the time sign-ups come around, but I don't really expect that (especially not by that point). But I do have other options, a couple crossover ships which are by definition crack ships and my eternal devotion to Buffy/Giles are always possible choices.

You know, I never thought of it that way. But you're right, they are canon's crack ship! They kinda work in a way in which they don't, but fans seem to love it anyway. Glee does that a lot more though. Which is why I've decided to expand the definition of crack pairing for this challenge to include obscure pairings, too.

That said, I'm glad you have some options to choose from. I would love to read your E/E, but I'm sure whatever you decide on will turn out great. :)

Can I just say how much I love this idea. I only ever seem to enjoy writing so called 'crack pairings' so this is just perfect. I can't wait for sign-ups, although this now means I'm going to have to pick between them all :/

I get what you mean, what with all the big bangs coming out at the same time. (I'm participating in a few myself.) But maybe you can work around them, making sure that none of the deadlines exactly collide?

Oh I more meant which of my ships to pick. I am already doing far too many Big Bangs, but that's never stopped me before. I'll definitely be signing up, especially since you offer the option to do mini Bangs, which is just perfect.

Oh! Sorry about that. And yes, that's exactly why I decided to include the option. So glad you're going to be participating. :)

So...just to be sure I'm understanding this right. If my pairing has never met/interacted in canon, and I haven't seen it written very often/at all, it counts as a crack pairing? Even if I find it perfectly logical, were these two to meet? I have several couples I can choose from, I just want to make sure I pick one that actually counts, haha.

Yes and yes! Point is, yes, you find it logical, but not everyone else does. I think that if you hit the first two questions, you're pretty safe already. :)

I'm assuming that shipping two characters who are actually the same person at different points in his life (But in different bodies. With different personalities. It's complicated) still counts as a ship, right?

(I'm not all that worried about it being crack, although the 10 minutes when they actually met consisted of nothing but one of them standing way too close, lavishing compliments, touching him on the face, and saying I love you)

This is Five/Ten from Doctor Who, BTW. Do they count?

That does sound complicated! Is this a popular pairing in fandom though? If not so much, then it definitely counts. :)

Popular? There isn't even anything on the kink meme of these two. There's a VERY small handful of things involving them along with other people romantically, and a couple gen stories I've read which co-star them, but most of the time when they share a fic it's as two separate stories in an anthology.

Or I'm just bad at searching for things, but either way, it's certainly not popular. =)

lol I hear the frustration (I think). :) Anyhow, it's definitely allowed for the exchange. And who knows? You might even get other people to like it, too.
