The explosions rocked the world around our ears. Dust and grit fell from the ceiling of the bunker as we braced for the next round of Alliance salvos to strike. My heart was pounding so hard I could nearly see it through my body armor. Taking out my crucifix, I said a quick prayer to the almighty to look after me and mine.

“Zoe?” I took a quick glance over at my best friend and anchor. “There’s got to be another way outta here.”

“Haven’t been able to find one sir.” Her dark eyes narrowed as the sound of gunfire and salvos stopped.

The sudden silence was deafening. Four of us hunkered down with our rifles aimed at the door that we’d wedged shut with all that we could including the bodies of our dead. It was all going to shit and had been since they’d left us all here to die. We’d been ordered to lay down our arms and surrender, but I had no intention of ever going peacefully into the arms of the Alliance. Jesus couldn’t be asking me to do that. He just couldn’t.

“You only have two choices!” The clipped Londinium accent of the Alliance officer sounded over his bullhorn as the battering ram hit the door had enough to bring down another chunk of our rickety ceiling. “Surrender or be buried alive. I will give you five minutes to surrender. In six minutes, I will order a tank to roll over your little burrow. So what is it going to be rabbits?”
