It wasn’t hard to follow the manic thumping of Jayne’s boots to find our way out of the cellblock in the darkness which I suppose was a blessing of sorts, since we’d have never been able to hear Zoë’s footsteps. There ain’t no one in the ‘verse as quiet as my Zoë.
Which I hadn’t had a chance to warn Kara about before Zoe slipped out of the shadows and grabbed my cellmate’s arm making her drop the makeshift weapon she had. Kara, being the trained Colonial fighter that she was, brought her forearm up under Zoë’s chin making her head snap back into the wall with a thud.

“Zoë! Stop!” I clamped my fingers around Zoë’s free hand before she could shove her knife between Starbuck’s ribs. “She’s on our side such as it is.”

“Sorry sir,” she said, taking the fraction of an inch she had left between her and Kara to back off from killing her or being killed by her. Wasn’t sure who’d win, but I could see from the look in Jayne’s little piggy eyes that he’d be willing to watch it happen. ‘Course Jayne probably would have preferred to see them do it naked. “Things didn’t go exactly as I’d planned them.”

“Again?” I let out a heavy sigh. “Who’s fault was it this time?”

“You mean besides you gettin’ arrested to begin with?” Jayne demanded as he slipped past us to head on down the hallway stepping over a fallen officer of the law his tarnished badge nearly ripped clean off his uniform. “Don’t know why you have to keep doing this Mal.”

“Shut up Jayne,” Zoë and I both said at the same time.

“Nice crew you’ve got here, Captain Reynolds,” Kara said with a snort. She crouched down to see if the man was still breathing. “He’s alive.”

“Most of them are,” Zoë said with a quick nod. “Don’t try to kill people who are just doin’ their jobs.”

“See, we’re nice.” We came around the corner into the main entry to the jailhouse. “Probably let more than just us two free as well.”

“A lot more.”

“Mal are you insane? It’s just a gorram gun.” It was nearly a shock for me to hear Simon cuss.

“It is not just a gorram gun. It is my gorram gun. And don’t swear doctor, it doesn’t suit you.” I sank down into my seat at the head of the kitchen table and looked over at the rest of the crew. “I took that gun off an Alliance bastard who was tryin’ to kill me. I want it back. Y’all don’t have to come with me.”

“What ‘bout her?” Jayne jerked his head toward where Kara was grimacing over some watery swill that passed for coffee on Serenity when we were low on funds. In other words, I was used to the swill. “Why don’t you trade her for your gun? They arrested her for a reason didn’t they? Maybe she’s got a good bounty on her head.”

“You frakking son of a bitch!” Kara’s fist connected with Jayne’s nose right quick bringing a much needed levity to the rest of the crew as only Jayne getting hurt did. “I know you don’t know me, but if you think I’m going to let you trade me for a gun you are out of your mind.”

“Don’t fear Starbuck. Unlike Jayne,” I gave him a warning glance. I’d never told the rest of the crew what he’d tried to do to Simon and River, but by now I was damn sure that Zoë and Inara knew all about it seeing as they were the only ones left alive who didn’t know. “I do not make profit by sellin’ off parts of my crew.”

“So I’m part of your crew now?” she asked as she wiped Jayne’s blood off of her fist with a tattered rag from the kitchen counter.

“Well you did say you were a pilot didn’t you?”
