Day 16

Day 16. A song that you used to love but now hateTry as I might, nothing jumps out at me here. Strange, really, because there are probably a hundred wines that I used to love but don't particularly care for any longer; with wine, the more I know about winemaking, the less tolerance and understanding I have for certain styles, especially those whose ( Read more... )

Worse, it manages to retread both Christ's crucifixion and the JFK assassination. Which would be triply banal even if it hadn't been only the year after Stone's horrible hatchet job of a movie.

I listened to that album an awful lot at the time--my college roommate was a huge XTC fan--but not much since. Even so, I had at most middling affection for "Peter Pumpkinhead". For me, the standout songs were "Dear Madam Barnum", "Crocodile", and "Then She Appeared".

And I agree that it might as well've been the final XTC album, since Dave Gregory left during the recording of Apple Venus, effectively removing the last brake on it turning into a complete monster Andy Partridge wankfest. This same college roommate tried to get me interested in it, but I found it unlistenable. "Stupidly Happy" later turned up in heavy rotation on the local mass-alt station, and it was like someone going out of their way to make me hate myself for ever liking them.

I think - but again am not sure - that Omnibus (is it even on that album?) is the one I liked. Not sure, though, and I'm not feeling any kind of urgency w/r/t figuring out if I still have that CD.

"Omnibus" is on Nonsuch; to me it was merely filler.

I know only a handful XTC songs since I bought two of the singles from Nonsuch from a bargain bin - The Disappointed and the song above. I knew the cover version of the latter from the Dumb and Dumber soundtrack (Crash Test Dummies feat. Ellen Reid). To this day, I still prefer that one to the original because it has more oomph and the vocals are less annoying.

Wow. Wow. I mean, wow. I didn't think anyone could find Brad Roberts' vocals less annoying than anything. (Or does Ellen Reid do all the singing? Because I'm not about to listen to the single to find out.)

She does do all the singing. Brad Roberts merely provides harmonies during the chorus.

This category is another difficult one. I'm not that fickle.

I don't hate this song, but then I never loved it. It's pretty forgettable. I did, however, hate a few songs from this album, which was a new, uncomfortable feeling for me. I had been indifferent to some XTC, but never hated any songs (except maybe Cynical Days) before Nonsuch came out.

I hated: The Smartest Monkeys, War Dance, Bungalow.

Oops. All Colin.
