I've been hearing a lot about Songs in the Key of London which took place last night at the Barbican. As you might recall, "Old British Man" is my favorite music genre of all time and I would have loved to see something like that. The Guardian and Timeout both listed their favorite London songs, and both were completely erroneous. Allow me to share my top 20:

1. Waterloo Sunset - The Kinks (I'm doing "one per artist". Other great Kinks songs about London include "Lavender Hill", "Big Black Smoke", "Berkeley Mews", "Denmark Street", "Muswell Hillbilly", etc.)
2. Mornington Crescent - Belle & Sebastian
3. Soho Square - Kirsty MacColl
4. The Wombling Song - The Wombles
5. London's Brilliant Parade - Elvis Costello
6. London Pride - Noel Coward
7. Fifty Two Stations - Robyn Hitchcock
8. Sunny South Kensington - Donovan
9. In Paradise - John Wesley Hardiing
10. Swiss Cottage Manoeuvres - Al Stewart
11. Following Camden Down - Tarkio
12. Piccadilly - Squeeze
13. Denmark Street - Martin Newell
14. Do Not Fear The Dark - Love Hall Tryst
15. Sights And Sounds Of London Town - Richard Thompson
16. Towers Of London - XTC
17. Fortis Green - Dave Davies
18. Kilburn Towers - The Bee Gees
19. Seven Dials - The Corner Laughers
20. Battersea Park - Bigwheel
