This Sunday will be Larry Bensky's final broadcast. I've woken up with Bensky every Sunday for the past 5 years and he will be sorely missed. He was one of the last voices of reason in an increasingly inane radio landscape ( Read more... )

cuppa joe, kpfa, bayleaf, bubble tea, bensky, fake meat, spangenberg, things that are gone

This is all very tragic, although Cuppa Joe remains the most tragic. And Bayleaf, which was also where we ate prior to the CL's public debut.

And is your "read more" quote by any chance a reference to the Tommy Keene song of the same name?

Yeah, that's the song I was thinking of. I forgot who did it though. I knew it was one of those Madsen-sounding bands.

I didn't even get into San Francisco and Marin in this post. There's probably another long list: Ord Street Studio, Mandrake Books, Wild Oats, New Albion (?), Musee Mechanic by the Cliff House (I know it moved somewhere, but I'm sure it sucks now)...

Help me out here.

Proving that I am an embarrassing old power pop man, I actually procured the CD with that song recently. I saw Tommy Keene open for Guided By Voices some time ago and bought a couple of his albums, but "Songs from the Film" (supposedly his best) has long been out of print. It spent 3 years on my Amazon wishlist before there was a used one cheap enough for my tastes. I don't know what the point of this story was.

Anyway, the Musee Mechanique (sp?) is now at Fisherman's Wharf. It still seems pretty cool.

I miss Wild Oats most of all for supplying us with Dr. Wild.

There was also Signature Thai which died, but then it resurrected and I don't know if it's still awesome or not. Did anything else from our 4th St days go the way of the poodle?

Didn't Taco Jane's (for lovers only) shut down in San Anselmo?

Spin the Apple never reared its ugly head again to my knowledge...

I was totally convinced that Kepler's Books had closed, but I just looked it up and it's still open!

It almost closed but then it was a fake-out and it came back to life!

They were about to close last year I think but some rich investors stepped in and bought them and kept them open. The same thing happened to Printer's Inc. when it first started going under and it only lasted for about a year after that, so I'm not sure Kepler's is safe yet.

I totally forgot a really big one - The Bay City Coffee House, where Bigwheel played the majority of their gigs. It got taken over by Tower Records about 7 years ago, BUT I was just in there last week (It's Rasputin's now) and there was a sign up saying that they planned to re-open the cafe so who knows? Maybe they'll hire Bigwheel to play at the grand opening.

This might be hard to believe, but Holland, MI has nothing that sounds even remotely as interesting as some of those places. We have Margarita's Mexican Restaurant, Tres Lobos Mexican Restaurant, Captain Sundae, Homemade Pizza Factory, and Huynh Vietnamese Restaurant. They all have good food and treats, but none of them are cool hangouts.

The rest of the places serve what Jessica (my wife) likes to call "White People food" You know really bland places like Russ', The Windmill Restaurant, etc.

I'm jealous that we don't have any places here to miss having around.

Oh, we do have the Knickerbocker theatre which shows some indie-films, but we don't get to go very often. We have children.
