Why was your empire in turmoil? Wasn't there a next of kin to take over?

Hmm...so I guess people of all classes suffered from that, then.

Well, I can't speak for every king out there, but the one I know's been nothing but kind. He stood by me when nobody else would.

Is he your king, or just one you happen to know?

Just one I know. My world doesn't have royalty, just a mayor.

[A beat.]

I met Mickey in the realm of darkness, and he stuck with me ever since.

I once ran for Homecoming Queen. [ this is her way of responding although she is not from a monarchy at all -- unless you count being occasionally called the queen-o-slayers? ] I lost.

A girl chosen by vote to reign over her classmates. A high school thing. [ then, haughtily, because she lost: ] It's totally just a popularity contest, anyway.

Well, you should've won. I'd have voted for you.

Funny you should ask, pal! You happen to be talking to the one and only king of Wasteland.

An honor to meet you, Your Majesty.

Heheh, you can just call me Oswald. [Not that "Your Majesty" didn't sound awesome, because it did. It made him swell up with pride. He just doesn't need to hear it too often.]

To answer your question, there isn't much of a separation of classes in Wasteland. I mean, sure, I have a big castle filled with statues and portraits of me, and a secret hideout protected by my own personal guard, but other than that I'm just your average Joe. I always went on adventures with my pals and helped out around the place. I even have my own little home in Ostown. The castle's just for show, ya know?

Oh yeah, just for show. I can understand that.

Once you start dividing things up into classes, it gets harder to remember that those classes are made of people.

Once you start generalizing anybody for anything it becomes a problem.

I can see the benefits to classification, though.

Well yeah, and it's a kind of problem that can spiral out of control.

Like what?

From a ruler's perspective, the needs of an individual group of people. If too much of the working class is unemployed, then jobs will need to be made available. One of the ways this worked out back home was that the noble families who could afford it would hire more servants.
