I once ran for Homecoming Queen. [ this is her way of responding although she is not from a monarchy at all -- unless you count being occasionally called the queen-o-slayers? ] I lost.

A girl chosen by vote to reign over her classmates. A high school thing. [ then, haughtily, because she lost: ] It's totally just a popularity contest, anyway.

Well, you should've won. I'd have voted for you.

Oh, God. Guy -- give me a moment to imagine you in a modern North American high school. It might actually make my week.

What, what's so funny about that?

Because I would totally bet that you'd be the popular jock boy. Those looks! That personality! Definitely.

[Jock?]

I don't know about that. I can be introverted when I want, after all.

That would only manage to add to your hearthrobbish mystery.

Jeez, I can't win, can I?

What if I was obnoxious and condescending?

You'd probably be dating Cordelia Chase.

And that's a bad thing.

She was one of my Homecoming Queen competitors.

[ though she lost, too. two other girls tied for the crown. ]

You've mentioned her before, haven't you? Not in the best light either, I don't think.

She was kind of the, uhm, top girl around Sunnydale High. Head cheerleader, perfect life, perfect family. Bad personality.

[ but all of that became overturned for cordelia, eventually. her family ran into financial trouble. she moved to la. fell in love with buffy's ex. became a hero. ]

That's a shame. I wonder why she had a bad personality with such a decent upbringing.
