A Very Cultured Weekend

On Thursday, hano, G. and I went to Six Characters in Search of An Author. Excellent updating, very cleverly changed so it's a documentary being filmed that the characters interrupt. Slightly odd fit to start with because the Characters are all still quite old-fashioned and melodramatic, but the Producer was excellent (Noma Dumezweni) and as well as ( Read more... )

I wonder if that was the same production of Six Characters" that I didn't see at The Citizens this summer. I'm definitely overdue getting back to the Citz, with luck before the panto season starts.

It's the Rupert Goold/Ben Powers version - I know it was at Chichester, but don't know if it's been anywhere else. Definitely worth seeing if you can, though.

Let me know when you're going to Houston, I'll join you there!

I think we felt much the same about the show: except I forgot to mention the windows-and-doors. I had meant to say something about the eyes to the soul... I remember reading somewhere that Rothko was inspired to paint those spaces - the window-like pieces - after he saw the work Michelangelo designed for the Medici Chapel/a> in Florence - the windows are solid stone. I have no idea if this is true or not.

I'm seriously thinking about coming down there a day early and just doing the Rothko and Bacon exhibitions (assuming Bacon is still on). Have had a lifelong passion for Rothko but never seen one 'live', as it were, so the idea of seeing many of them in a room together, full size, is extremely appealing.

I've not seen the Bacon but believe me, the Rothko is *absolutely* worth it. Just for that moment when you first walk into the 3rd room, let alone the rest.

Oh, dear lord, is he STILL harping on about the secret lair in the cellar? :-) Good luck with that...
