Finished reading my fourth Christopher Brookmyre novel now, "all fun and games until somebody loses an eye." I know that phrase as some kind of childhood wisdom that parents would utter, but turns out  (via google) it's a roman thing - the only way to disqualify yourself from a roman wrestling match was to poke someone's eye... nothing directly
