First: Baby on the Road: Thoughts from Places - if you don't already watch the Vlogbrothers you're missing out but take a sec to watch this one. LOL that quote in the article! “Race matters in these books... It’s a matter of how you express that in the 21st century.”

Because Mark Twain was totes writing Huck Finn just for us in the 2000's.

Wow, that Huck Finn story is ridiculous. I thought my high school English teacher handled the teaching of Huck really well (and I live in a redneck town with a LOT of racist people, so we were no strangers to hearing the N word). He really set the historical context, and after reading the book we read two essays by critical theorists, one in favor of the teaching of Huck and one against. Then we wrote essays on whether or not we thought the book should be taught in high schools. I have done the same thing with the Outsiders in my classroom because it's been challenged/banned quite a few times in other areas.
