I've been in a sci-fi mood lately with my books.

I read John Scalzi's Zoe's Tale a few weeks ago and absolutely loved it. After that I read Dune Messiah, which I also loved. I'm reading Scalzi's Old Man's War right now and I think I can safely say - even though I've only read 1.5 of Scalzi's books - that he is awesome and I want to read ( Read more... )

Lois McMaster Bujold's Miles Vorkosigan series is my favorite. I think you would LOVE those books.

I don't actually read hard SF normally. But I really enjoyed Asimov's Foundation, and Card's Ender's Game (I haven't read any of the sequels, and the one prequel, Ender's Shadow may actually be a huge mistake).

For crackfic, tho, I highly recommend Janet Kagan's Mirabile. It's not OMG SERIOUS. But what it is is omg FUN WITH GENETIICS. And for space-opera, the Starbridge series are AWESOME.

Julie E. Czerneda writes the best aliens ever, if you like that sort of thing, since she used to be a biologist. She isn't your traditional 'hard' sf writer (she has excellent characterization for one thing) but I think her world building is on par with Herbert.

A Thousand Words for Strangers is one of her best, and Beholder's Eye is about an adorable blue-blob who can shapeshift into any species. It's totally fascinating, because she draws on her biology knowledge to create all these different forms, and they're all totally believable.
