And this may be just me, but I found it a little (darkly) amusing that Morgan got annoyed with Hotch for walking into deathtraps (because seriously...hypocritical much?)
I don't think he's being a hypocrite, I just think he's worried, I mean how many times has Hotch got on him about walking into death traps and telling him that he doesn't trust the team enough and then he goes and does it? I just think that Morgan thinks it's out of character for Hotch, and that's a red flag right there.
totally valid point given that everyone's shaken up about Hotch but I guess what bothers me most is that Morgan tends to see himself as disposable and doesn't acknowledge it. It would have been interesting to have had Rossi or someone point that out when Morgan criticized Hotch for it.
And seriously I can't be the only one who's seeing the Prentiss/Hotch, right?
I can see where you're going with that question. I don't know if that was their intention per se...But I can see where you're getting that vibe. I'm not feeling it but then it's may be because I don't zone in on them that much.

someone pointed out the Hotch/Prentiss last week and I was all like "nahh" but this week...I just couldn't ignore it anymore. It's still possible that I'm seeing things though :P
But once table turn and someone protected him (Amplification was perfect for this example) he's back to being vulnerable.
you know, this is a terrific articulation of his character and an interesting interpretation of the Morgan-Reid dynamic in Amplification. I'm surprised I never thought of it that way :O
While I agree that 'disposable' probably is too strong a word, my mind just keeps going back to the 4x01/Mayhem episode. It wasn't simply that he pulled a stupidly heroic move with the ambulance but just the way he went about it--without so much as a backwards glance or a split-second of hesitation--that's what scares me and makes me think there really is something there that goes beyond what can be interpreted as team loyalty. It might even just be what Hotch has said about his issues with trust and how he wants to do certain things for himself and

Oh... the time ambulance vehicle go boom. (Beautiful scene between Garcia and Morgan) With him not second guessing himself... Again to me, its tunnel vision. Shit happening now and that instant. He gotta do something in that moment before anyone else would be killed. If there was any sign of fear, its well beneath the surface because he also have to know that if he starts freaking out Garcia gonna lose focus and freak out.
Though I like how you brought up Hotch's comment. It still makes me think of Amplification and vulnerability as reinforcing the thought that he doesn't want protection. He wants to be that protector instead. Whether or not he trust himself... is interesting... Can you elaborate?

(so this kind of got carried away and became essay/meta/fic on another document but I'll try to give you a nutshell version)
This is actually in line with the protectiveness/tunnel-vision you mentioned but I think there are at least two interpretations of what his motives are. He's shown that he'll take a hit for the team without question but is it because of his obligation and personal attachment to these people or because he won't be able to cope later with the fact that he wasn't strong enough to stop people from getting hurt. It's likely bits of both but the latter places a greater emphasis on his self-image and self-trust. If someone else got hurt and he could have taken their place, I feel that not only would he blame himself but he'd also see himself as less competent and question his own abilities. What this translates to basically is that part of why he puts himself into these risky positions could be self-assurance, constant reminders that he is able

exactly! I know that with a cast that already has so much chemistry with another, it's easy to see subtext everywhere, but I have a feeling that the writers really were doing this on purpose

Oh, totally. I mean, her little speech at the end? Going round Hotch's apartment all the time? Canon. Oh yes.
