Whether or not he trust himself... is interesting... Can you elaborate?
(so this kind of got carried away and became essay/meta/fic on another document but I'll try to give you a nutshell version)
This is actually in line with the protectiveness/tunnel-vision you mentioned but I think there are at least two interpretations of what his motives are. He's shown that he'll take a hit for the team without question but is it because of his obligation and personal attachment to these people or because he won't be able to cope later with the fact that he wasn't strong enough to stop people from getting hurt. It's likely bits of both but the latter places a greater emphasis on his self-image and self-trust. If someone else got hurt and he could have taken their place, I feel that not only would he blame himself but he'd also see himself as less competent and question his own abilities. What this translates to basically is that part of why he puts himself into these risky positions could be self-assurance, constant reminders that he is able to do his job/take care of people/etc.
ugh, this is probably redundant and still not coherent (and got way longer than it was supposed to), but yeah, there's just so much behind this guy, so many potential issues with control and trust and how he views himself as a team-member and person--I could go on forever.
Also, There's a terrific fic that bookgodess15 posted recently on the comm which did a great job in articulating this side of Morgan I kept visualizing.
I see where you're going at. (And I read the delightful fic) It made sense and which opens the gap on the fact we don't know much about Morgan. The most we got was Profiled Profilers and that's it. There were some interaction among coworkers but he didn't (Or at least I don't feel it) that he received another episode. There were parts reflecting on his cop days and his dad but again... not so much.
Even though he did clearly shine in Soul Mates (forgot what episode was that...) It could just be me though, but I found it really interesting in Morgan interrogation with the Unsub. "I don't know what it's like to be in love with another guy." Came to be a favorite line but i don't know why....
And I am digressing.
So in short, I understand where you're coming at. I believe its a bit a both, which is a lot of pressure for one guy. Poor Morgan D:
