Hyperion, Thursday [Thanksgiving]

Nov 24, 2010 14:38

Thanksgiving at the Hyperion was a tradition by now. Piper and Veronica made sure of it as they once again took over the kitchen. They were cooking enough food to feed a small army.

Various appetizers were available to enjoy (some including bacon) while awaiting dinner. It was just a few hours away.

"Good to know I've got a place to stay when I visit," Piper said. "I intend to at least do that, while I teach or not."

"Well I was going to start with 'hi'--"

So. This was going to be... awkward, possibly? Mac hoped not, but after three years, and clearly a lot of life in-between, she wasn't sure of anything. Also, torn between any number of emotions that she was battling to morph into some semblance of 'calm'. Yeah, she was completely calm about this. Really.

It was half working.

Well, she should've expected this. But even then, Cally was caught a little by surprise. Though, even though she'd been avoiding it, she thought it was a bit of a pleasant surprise. "Hi is a good start," she said, a sad smile on her face. Nicky, for his part, dropped a little cracker on the floor and said 'Uh-oh'.

It was his new favorite phrase.

"I guess people really have been holding out on me." Okay, yes, somewhere inside she was a little... or quite a bit, annoyed about that. After everything, it seemed like she was the only person who didn't get the memo.

It was fairly well eclipsed, at least, by a chuck of relief at seeing Cally again, all in one piece and back here, and she had to crack a little smile at Nicky.

"Happy thanksgiving," she offered. Much easier than opening the whole can of worms that would come of 'how have you been?' or 'Wow, you have a kid?' or... anything else she said, really.

"Happy Thanksgiving," Cally said, so unsure of what to say, herself. Thought and emotions all flowed through her brain. Then, though, she knew exactly what to say.

"Sorry. For... everything," she said, after a moment of hesitation.

Mac almost instinctively echoed back an apology, only realising after she'd opened her mouth that she wasn't sure what she'd be apologising for, and closed it again with a slight nod.

"Most of that, not really in your hands," she noted logically. It still hurt, though. "How long have you been back?"

"But the part where I've been back since June, that's entirely on me," Cally said. "So... Almost six months?"

"Six months?" She'd been thinking a few weeks. Maybe a two or three months at most. Six. Wasn't that just what a girl wanted to hear?

Cally gulped, this was exactly what she'd been avoiding. Admittedly, for far too long.

"I didn't know how to tell you," Cally said, and it just sounded so stupid when she said it. "I just... I didn't know how I'd handle seeing you again."

It'd been a long time. And so much had happened.

"Right." Right. It could've been longer for her, probably more complicated. "You know, email even, would've been good." She could've been okay with that. It was something.

"You're right," Cally said.

Nicky, not knowing the seriousness going on around him, dropped another cracker and went "Uh-oh!"

"You deserved something. But I'd just... You know, you deserve the whole story. It might not make what I did right, but it might explain why I didn't say anything."

"Guessing today's probably not the day for that," Mac noted. Thanksgiving, middle of a room full of people... There would be another time. For now, just going to be happy to know she was around and okay.

"... So. Who's this little guy?" she asked after a moment, turning her attention to Nicky and his crackers. Possibly not a simple question, but one that needed to be asked.

"This is Nicky," Cally said, grateful to get the subject mostly off her own guilt. She even brought him closer so Mac could get a better look. "He's about sixteen months. He's about the one good thing I got to take out of the past few years."

"Hey Nicky," she directed down to him lifting her hand to reach out and give one of his tiny ones a shake.

"Really freaking cute." Well. He was. "Here I just about manage Poe."

"You still have Poe?" Cally said, her expression a mix of shock and excitement. "I'd have thought he'd have... that's amazing."
