Jalapeno dip

Dec 30, 2013 16:38

I bought some jalapeno dip and it was delicious.  My kids were dipping their veggies and scarfing it down like it wasn't even healthy.

Then I looked at the nutrition info, and it seems one tablespoon of dip is equal to a snack bag of potato chips.  No wonder my kids were eating it up.

Is there a low-fat jalapeno dip I could make myself?

dips and spreads, diet: low-cal, vegetarian

Hummus, lowfat cream cheese, and lowfat yogurt strike me as some possible bases.

Sounds yummy, but it needs to be non-dairy, and i think hummus=chick peas? Gives some people a stomach-ache.

going low-fat is always a balancing act in trying to make sure the taste is still just as good. Usually commercial low-fat stuff is crammed with sugar or HFCS to make up for the lack of flavour, so I will be interested to read other people's suggestions on this :)

Yes! Low fat = higher sugar! Which is why I like to make things myself.

So, how can I make the brocoli get dipped into something that sets my mouth on fire?

;) I mean that in a nice way...

looking at some of the other responses and filtering through my own brain. My tasty, spicy braaaaaiiiiin:

home made yoghurt is trivially easy to make and equally easy to thicken. It's also very good for you. Not low fat, but whatever, it's awesome stuff ;)

Hummus - very easy to make, but has a distinct flavour when made to recipe. You could make your dip from the cooked chickpeas, water, and olive oil for a creamy but bland base that you can jazz up however you like.

Low fat cream cheese - if you *have* to, but low fat cheese makes me cry :'(

Whichever base you go with, get some habaneros from your local market and drop some fire on the hole :D. If you don't want just raw heat, get some fresh jalapenoes, some canned chipotle, and some dried banana or bell peppers for a multi-layered flavour approach :)

Why don't I just skippety hop over to my grocery store and stock up on all these things? Instead of making a dip, I'll have a nilce chunky salsa. Then I can celebrate the new year by setting my brain on fire.

I love that this doesn't come with a hangover later ;)

I make a green chilli cream cheese dip. the base is low fat cream cheese (one block) and a bit of milk to loosen it up. I add a small peno to it, a clove of garlic and some onion. All minced to a far thee well. You can pretty much use cream cheese and bit of milk for any kind of dip.

I make the dip in a food processor.

I'm going to keep that idea for when dairy is not an issue.
thanks!

Use less cream cheese and more filler like spinach, cilantro, etc. That way you won't have to sacrifice the flavor of regular cream cheese.

cilantro tastes like soap. Is there an alternate spice?

Hah! You're a mutant!

(seriously - there is a rare mutation where the possessors of the mutation think that cilantro tastes like soap, and as hop flavour molecules are very similar chemically, they also pick up a soapy flavour in beer)

That explains why IPAs are the most vile things I've ever tried to put in my mouth.
