It's Spiedie Season

Spiedies are a regional specialty of Broome County NY. We even have an annual Spiedie Fest and Balloon Rally.

Spiedies were probably introduced by Italian immigrants from the Abruzzo area ("Which way EJ?"), who came to Broome County to work for the Endicott Johnson Shoe Company. In Italy the marinated skewers of lamb or goat are called spidducc

zomg, spiedies! My aunt lives in upstate NY, and we fell in love with spiedie sauce on a visit up there. My mom brings home bottles and bottles for us when she goes to visit- you can't find any down South. Bless you for your recipe- I just finished my last bottle, and Mom doesn't go to see Aunt Carol until the fall. :)

I lived in Upstate NY for 20 years (Utica-Rome area) and had never heard of these, LOL. Sounds like a meat lover's dream; the marinade sounds delicious.

I saw a similar recipe when I was browsing Epicurious the other day where they called it spiedini. I NEED to try this. Yum!

It appears that "spiedini" refers to anything grilled on little skewers, like shish kabobs. Spidducc' (or Arrosticini) is particular to the Abruzzo region and is specifically lamb or goat with no vegetables or other other additions on the skewers. The Spiedies of Broome County are usually just marinated pork or chicken, no vegetables.
