Plates/dinnerware question

So when I moved out of my parents' house, my mom bought me some really cheap plastic plates from Walmart. Well, it's been 4 years now, and they are showing their age. Between just being pretty cheap plates, I've also used them as cutting boards since I didn't have one. I'm looking to replace them, and I want to get "real" plates, the kind that ( Read more... )

I prefer porcelain. Stonewear chips easily. Hate corelle- very flimsy and not at all study feeling.
That being said, you put up with plastic - eeek - plates for four years, whatever you get is going to be a major improvement. Ikea sells inexpensive plates both in sets and by the piece. You don't have to buy a set- I mix and match as well as having sets.

Yeah, I've found stoneware varies a lot in how much it chips - some chips hardly at all, some chips really easily.

ya corell I use it in my tiny kitchen since i have too much stuff. I also got a set for my mum since its light weigh and good for people with bad hands.

go with a wood cutting board.

also check thrift stores for nice cheap sets if you dont need it on your first vist you have time to find something nice.

I've been using Fiestaware for a few years and LOVE it. love love love. I love the colors, it's sturdy, and unlike the Pfaltzgraf I had before that, it's rare for the colors to stop getting made.

And it goes on sale quite frequently at Macy's, and amazon generally keeps a bunch of the colors in stock.

Slightly different advice. Don't use lemon to wash your dishes, they will last longer that way. I agree with the stoneware comment, it chips like crazy. I used my mother's hand me down corell for years, and really think it's pretty good stuff for your money and like was also mentioned, easily replaceable.

Corelle is great. I grew up on it and my husband and I love it. It is inexpensive and easy to replace - Corelle sells open stock replacement. I did have a lovely set of Pfaltzgraf before I got married but stoneware is very heavy and does have a tendency to chip ( ... )

How do you sanitize your wooden cutting board after cutting raw meat on it?
^-^ I'm new to most of these things.

I don't cut raw meat on the wooden board, I use the plastic board for that. My flexible plastic boards are larger than my wooden one, so sometimes I put the plastic one on top of the wooden one (just to protect the counter top - we had our kitchen redone a couple years ago and my husband is a bit paranoid about the counters now - grin). However, to disinfect a wooden cutting board, you can use white vinegar (full strength) and/or 3% hydrogen peroxide.
